There is a way.
All you need to do is togit gud

Don't fall into pit with Booster.
Jump over it (look for red cue line in floor).
In the Core room, find sparkling rope item.
Grab Curly after killing the Core.
In the waterways, get into the little house.
Examine books, de-flood Curly and re-grab her.
After killing the fish and losing Curly, go to teleporter house.
Get Booster 2.0 from doc (and fly up for Spur if you still have PS).
In Plantation, go to bottom-right cave and talk to Curly/weird dude.
Go to Graveyard's hidden room; talk to purple-mushroom until you fight/kill him.
Shove him down Curly's throat and get her little heart-charm.
After killing the final boss, when island is falling, go back into the top-house.
Save and enter the pit.Have fun.

Actually there are two hints, but they're subtle. First is in the top-house, where a book of Doc's mentions he was about to finish Booster 2.0, which Quote says "if he were still alive...". Second is on a replay after thinking you can save him, seeing the little red cue in the pit area.
Pixel obviously didn't make it very obvious so most found out via Internet, but he intended for you to fuck it up the first time through. Sorta what makes saving Curly feel special (besides Hell and Ballos being a bitch).
