Zidane is the worst fucking protag in the series, he's a bland rehash of a character from an earlier game that misses the mark, just like the entirety of 9 is a bland rehash of 3, 4 and 5 but without the charm to pull it off.
Zidane is basically Locke, but the point was Locke's womanising thief character was a facade, hiding his true personality as a guilt ridden, desperate man trying to save the only person he actually cared about in the world. Over time this deception is revealed and Locke grows as a character once he is able to let go of the past. Zidane literally gets the reveal that he's a bioweapon, you get 5 minutes of him killing trash enemies while admittedly good music plays, and then his friends show up and say "it's ok man :)" and he's back to normal immediately.
Don't get me wrong, I don't hate 9, but it's got some really shitty writing, and I'm glad Zidane is dead 2 years post ending and Garnet has to suffer ruling alone.

I like IV more than V but it is not the more difficult game. V's bosses are much more difficult (the crystals fight, for example) without extreme preparation. In IV you can fight every battle and do just fine against bosses - until you reach the moon and need to level from 50 to basically 70 before you can take down the final boss. The DS version of FFIV is difficult, but even Proto-Babil isn't as irritating as Neo Shinryu in FFV Advance.
