The T rating keeps kids away but the art style keeps teens and young adults away.

It's probably one of my favourite games of all time, and even I can see that it never had a chance. Better marketing would have helped a little, but ultimately, it was never going to sell well. It wouldn't sell much better on a more popular system, either. It simply never had a chance.
The learning curve scared people away, and putting effort into playing video games is too much work

W101 is honestly probably one of the best games I've ever played. Everything about it feels like such a labor of love, and it's honestly fucking criminal it was such a commercial flop.

To be fair, Platinum games are genuinely pretty bad at teaching the player. If you want to learn how to play a Platinum game, you're better off just asking someone who's already played it.
Wonderful 101 is honestly the worst game I've ever played. Confusing and unrewarding boring combat, a shit ton of LOL EBIC MEMES, a shit controller to play it on, I could go on and on.

Can't overstate my love for this game... just started over a new save file last week just to do everything and get everything in it... again.
