I bought it to play with a friend who was depressed. It's pretty fun, and I like it better than L4D, but I'm not really great at it. The final wave in the first level wipes my team every time on normal and above.

Honestly, I played for about 45 hours until I got bored.
The only reason I stopped playing is because like you said, it's too hard.
I couldn't find any servers playing on anything higher than Hard, unless they were grinding BP or HoM.
This might not have been a problem if the game was marketed well, or if the company had the merit that Valve did when they made L4D.
