Are you good at google-fu? Know how to find exactly what you're looking for?
You already know half of programming. Most programs are stitched together with code from stackoverflow posts. Even back in ye olde days pre-internet programmers had "cookbooks" with tons of commonly programmed things already typed out and explained.
Hit up codecademy, pick a language, learn the fundamentals, and dive in. If you run in to any trouble, google that shit!

advice

>get a real programming job and work on your game on the side so you don't die
>if possible find team mates who aren't autists or cunts so the workload doesn't take a million years
>don't expect your game to take off; if you want commercial success you should make several good ones that aren't necessarily super long
>>
>>318584559
Can make games without knowing how to draw.
Look at stuff like tetris, or roguelikes, or platformers like iwbtg.
Get started making any game. Get involved in other people's projects. Sooner or later you'll either have the connections, knowledge, or money to get art for your games.
>>
>>318583332
thanks. yea i though about doing 3d platformer like this, might do something like that later on

>>318584493
thanks. There are a bunch of animals, each has their own unique skills and attributes. Currently, you can freely swap between any animal as long as you can get next to it.

example, squirrels can climb trees. rabbits can jump highest, turtles can survive underwater and out of water, sheep can float on air currents.

The levels have smaller collectibles and 2-3 main goals per level

Its allowing a lot of fun and interesting level design and so far it's not possibly to die. Im working on possible ways to handle enemies and they may appear later in the game.

I would love to make a follow up to New Vegas but using the old Fallout 2 iso engine. Not really sure how practical that is though. Especially since there are some modifications to the mechanics I would want like weapon/armor modification and such.

Already started writing out some of the core setting and story concepts. Will just have to address engine stuff later.

Obviously can't charge for it or whatever. Just want to do it to prove it to myself that I can, and because I am so utterly disenfranchised with the way the IP is being treated by Bethesda.

Thank you for taking the time to read my personal blog.

Store them in linked list arrays.
>>
>>318585984
Regular.

At most I have preprocessor macros that help it not be a huge clusterfuck of magic numbers.

The latest bug is when one enemy gets killed on the second time combat is initialized, all of the other enemies become null, and the ghost of one enemy continually exists and causes the deathcount to increase by 1 every turn.

And also they can't die because they technically don't exist.

So now I'm fucking around with a lot of shit to try and get it to stop shitting the bed. I'm so fucking close I can practically taste it.

>>
>>318586072
>coding a turn-based battle system seems really hard
The hard part being programing the AI, right? If that's true, try looking into finite state machines. It might give you an idea of how to program an enemy to choose attacks and such.

If the hard part is the turn-based, then it's not hard. I'd do something like:
while(battle = true){
UserTurn()
ComputerTurn()
}

>>318585892
Well, it's been so long that I don't really remember where I learned it from! I just pieced things together from different online tutorials. I think there's a book called Accelerated C++ that's highly regarded.

It's probably not going to be on Steam in time for Christmas, but the game will certainly be done by then, and released on another site. Aside from the cutscenes the game is nearly content-complete. Working my ass off here, and it feels good.

Very little to no slowdown.

Using objects is far more efficient for your workflow. I'm seriously this close to learning objects and switching from this array system for my game because it's this annoying.

Should I learn C# for games? What language did you start off with? Every time I try to start learning C++, i feel like I just hit a wall.

Tell me how to start in Unity /v/
Any good guides on 2D game making?
I plan to do a rogue pixelshit top down game that has 'MUH CHOICES' and a companion.
But I really don't know how to start, like on everything, although I have everything planned out on a document
I have basically no knowledge on anything besides basic programming
Any book recommendations for both art, works of Unity and Java? Any good music software
Yeah, I'm pathetic. Thanks in advance

The thing about idea guys is that unless you have actual game making skills to back up your ideas, you're beyond disposable. If an "idea" and being a freewheeling faggot is all you've got, you better hope the team likes you because they can just take your idea, make a game based on it and leave you by the roadside as their team soars to fame and riches.
>>
Yes actually!
I'm working on something vaguely based on PM&TTYD, but I'm having trouble with partner designs.
For reference, the game is based on a Magitech-level fantasy setting, where the protag and his gang are a bunch of train robbers in the desert lands, until the evil count Eschewilde blows up the train they were robbing and makes off with some mysterious magical artifact. A strange girl and the last born of an ancient Druidic bloodline offers her aid in getting the treasure back, as The Count is going to cause the end of the world if he gets his hands on all the artifacts.
So far I have the Townel Gang (Lindell Townel - the protag of course's train robbing gang), who have the game's knockoff of Tattle and play like the goomba party members, Sylvie (the white Mage sorta chickie) who's field ability can grow dead and dying plants to create platforms and similar, and Drake (A Draconic beastman) who breathes fire to clear obstacles and suchlike.

Combat would be similar to TTYD, except Lindell uses guns and shortswords to fight.
However, instead of badges and BP, you use abilities gained off equipment and AP (as do your various partners and party members) to get skills, in a similar vein to FF9.

Any ideas and suggestions are welcome of course!
>>
>>318594460

You can run faster by running forward for a few seconds, and the sliding is there to keep that built-up speed, as well as for big-jumping.

I don't know if I mentioned that you can big-jump in the demo, but how it works is that you slide for about a second and then jump out of it. Big-jumping puts you at top speed when you hit the ground again, and you go much higher and farther than a standard jump. Sliding is there to make big jumps smoother to perform without compromising speed by crouching.

All this will be better-explained in the final game. The demo has a big enough wall of tutorial text as is.

If you're going to have a character that can steal items from enemies, I'd recommend letting the player get them earlier rather than later, so that they don't have to backtrack to every previous enemy to see what they drop. As well, stuff that's high risk/high reward is always great, like Danger Mario.

Lindell gets Mug on a weapon fairly early, just have to learn it, and his gang is with you from the get-go, and they can also get Mug.
Stat building is just like in TTYD with a choice of HP, MP, or AP every level, with equipment deciding attack and defense and that like.
Most AP abilities for partners are modifiers rather than brand spanking new skills, so you gotta go do sidequests to properly upgrade them like you would with shine sprites and shit like that.
>>
>>318595525
Well it could be faster, but going fast doesn't seem to be a main point for this game, so it's fine. It seems pretty promising though, great music, fun gameplay, and overall good aesthetic.
>>
I steal art (3d and 2d and sounds) then I make games and release them on google play for free.

I haven't stolen music yet, but only because I like writing my own and also feel like it would take over the style of my game.

for comparison, our pyramid is about 9.5 inches tall

we coded up a quick and dirty 3D tetris and some other shit for it, all for a 24 hr competition and in that frame we were only able to get one degree of rotation out of the tetraminos (had to focus on the other shit to show off)

We have to present it again today and I just finished getting all 3 axis of rotation down

But if you acknowledge that is all you are bringing to the table and don't try to be something you are not, is that really bad? I mean some people could genuinely just want to give those people with the skills to see it through the ideas for great games. And maybe be some sort of project management if required.

I agree that if an ideas guy gets uppity and tries to say shit like the game only got made because of them, then they are a fuckwit and not the kind of people needed in the hobby. But if they say they are happy that their idea led to the creation of something great because they were able to find the talented people to see it through to reality, I would want them to stick around.

Kind of like how Alex Garden used to correct people when they referred to Homeworld as his game, and he pointed out it was only completed because of the efforts of everyone on the team.

Match blocks ironically to postpone the sweet release of death

It's got the retro art and the screenshake, everything the hipsters love (except sound because that's are too mainstream)

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/102567447/matchtest.zip

I'm brainstorming on how multiplayer would work. Like maybe both players have their own timers and try to get points on the same grid, or they have seperate grids and send garbage to the other player's timer (so they have less time obviously, and they chain blocks to get rid of the garbage, but if they chain the garbage-destroying sets into other sets they can send the whole thing at their opponent).

You never know what will happen anon. A mate of mine ended up getting us involved in playtesting for a PnP RPG from Fantasy Flight Games. He got this by being a verbose idiot with opinions on the internet, and one of the devs asked him if his group would be willing to playtest. He now writes for them freelance as well. And was even offered a fulltime job over there writing/developing for them, but turned it down like an utter fuckwit, despite it being his dream.

Its a plot about 2 co-workers hired by the government in search for a kidnapping fiasco, in a world with different species.

Gameplay revolves around the Gunslinger based around kicks and ranged shooting, and the muscle girl based around physical punching, wrestling and weapon swinging

Their chemistry is neutral as they have been co-workers for a long time that casually treat each other like shit nothing too serious because they are both separately married to their significant other

They travel in a piece of shit RV and the gameplay is more like an action adventure but will have moments of dialogue exploration in towns and conversations in general

If all you want to do is make a game, go for it.

I think people worry about that whole "bad habits" thing too much. Every language I've ever touched has taught me a habit that I had to break to use another one.

Yeah I'm looking at a VN but with character stats and maybe some other stats that dynamically change the layout of the story.

Would renpy still be useful?

My friend and I are. I'm learning how to model and do animation while he's writing the script/story ect. I help him with character ideas too but I'm sticking to modeling and animation.

What engine is best for making a walking simulator? Seems like it'd be one of the easier things to make and I mostly just want to focus on level design.

Should I also consider making my own engine? I know some C++ already, but how difficult/tedious is it making your own engine for a 3D game?

I'm working on the main GUI right now. I can't draw and I can't into good looking colors but I am making attempts. It's probably fine enough now as a placeholder until I bother learning more about drawing things. I want to get back to coding. Making assets are hard even if they are just placeholders for me.

I've been working on a fighting game and adding in a second guy. I've been procrastinating though and a little depressed. Gonna smoke bud now.

GM is shit with 3D. Only good for topdown and everything else 2D.

But since you're into unity, stay with it. It's becoming industry standard and whatnot
>>
>>318605451
As long as you don't want 3D movement like Danganronpa, sure. I'd recommend looking through some renpy forums to see what its limits are.

>Should I also consider making my own engine?
9 times out of 10, nope.
For a game like that, just stick to any popular 3d engine and you will have more than enough support to get through the project.

If you plan making a career out of games then reinventing the wheel once would teach you a lot.
If you're just wanting to make a game, then just go ahead and pick up an engine. Making a game is already hard enough. Don't throw all that extra weight on yourself unless its for your career path.
>>
>>318606451
If the best you have is 'some experience in C++' then start with something easier.
>>
>>318605518
Anon, there is hardly anything that is a truly original story these days. Don't be so concerned with it if there are similarities so long as you have told it your way. It has been a decent while since that movie, and I am sure it isn't entirely original either. Comparisons might be made, but that doesn't invalidate what you have created.

Make like Nike and just do it anon.

I just refactored a shitload of code to add namespaces, remove singletons and use events instead of assuming objects are all there all the time

Next week is going to be fun though. Ludum Dare 34 coming up and this is going to be our team's second game.

All I ask for is the ability to get a shitty bobblehead for the dashboard. Maybe the hula hoop girl, maybe something else, maybe a bunch, but it needs to be in.

Sounds neat, though the fact that your asking for character design i assume you have barely any progress right?

Maybe when you actually designed something you could share, i would love to see your idea progress
>>
>>318607469
Not that anon, but could you have a road map that after you open it for the first time, it doesn't fold back up properly? Like you could clearly see that when it is sitting back on the dashboard where it was thrown in frustration. And then has annoying creases when you open it again. Fuck those things.
