PS4 and XBO were out of date before they even came out.
Truth is that consoles simply can't keep up with hardware AND stay price competitive nowadays. The only way they can keep them in a reasonable price range is to give them toaster parts then optimize the system as much as possible.
PS3 was Sony's attempt to create a console with competitive power by using hardware that PCs don't use. Truth is that the PS3 hardware was actually really good for the time that it was released and had some real potential but it proved a failure because of how difficult it was for devs to make games for two entirely different types of hardware, which is why they went back to standard with the PS4. However now they face the problem of not being able to keep up with hardware advances without making their console insanely over-priced.
I think that consoles will actually die out in a couple of generations, PS5 might be the last playstation. Not that this will make anything better, the industry will just switch to mobile gaming when consoles become unworkable.
That said, consoles aren't 'holding gaming back'. Even if consoles did not exist developers would still make games for low-mid range computers, not top tier gaming rigs because no developer would sacrifice 90 percent of their market just to make a show of how shiny and pretty their game is (not to mention the extra costs of developing a game with high-end graphics and such). The concept that consoles are holding back gaming is complete bullshit purely because devs would pander to the lowest common denominator no matter what.

I read Dan's review, and I was baffled by it. He begins by saying that the game immediately gives you an infinite rocket launcher in a scripted sequence on top of a cargo plane, and thereafter introduces you to the wingsuit and the grappling mechanic. He suggests that the game gives you its biggest additions to this iteration right off the bat, before saying that blowing shit up (with them) constitutes the majority of the game's content - along the lines of, "It's basically all you do."
He follows this up by saying that the game is riddled with technical issues - long loading times and an unacceptably inconsistent framerate that actually slows down the game's physics engine - but that they didn't meaningfully impact him personally.
Somehow a game that can be summed up as, "It only does one thing, it's more of the same, and it's technically incompetent," is a 4/5.

What's the deal with Giant Bomb these days?
I know that things will never return to the way they were pre-CBSI return and Ryan's death, but it seems like they've been negatively influenced by the rise of YouTube, streaming, and the decline of traditional games media outlets. Unprofessional Fridays and streams aren't unprofessional, they're lazy. They're a way for the crew to produce content that doesn't require the type of effort that more traditional video features require. No one pays attention to what is being played because the impromptu nature means that not everyone is necessarily going to be on board with each others' games. Yet for whatever reason, Friday streams, GBEAST streams, and let's plays like Vinnyvania and Metal Gear Scanlon constitute the bulk to the site's content.
While I'm grateful for the content that they produce, I never visited Giant Bomb to see a bunch of middle-aged dudes let's play video games together. The appeal of the site was always that it was a group of genuine friends with wicked senses of humor giving an insider view into video games journalism. With Vinny isolated on the East Coast with Austin and Alex, and Jeff on the West with Brad (who still falls asleep during live streams) and Dan (who, while funny, doesn't know how to play off of Jeff), I don't think there's any way to get that out of the site at this point.

I think I'm just tired of this trend. Ever since the GCN/PS2/Xbox generation we've been stuck with largely the same brands. While Nintendo was fucking around with all their IPs in the early 2000's - which produced shit like Sunshine, Galaxy, Wind Waker, Metroid Prime, and the Star Fox spinoffs - since then they've settled back into making safe, samey games like NSMB, Mario & Luigi, etc.
The same stands true for other properties like Assassin's Creed, Halo, Fallout, the GoWs, and Call of Duty (Advanced Warfare being the exception for whatever reason); they're just stagnating and it's a product of video games being a business. The financial pressure (and rewards) of being a business incentivizes big developers and their publishers - and smaller ones, to an extent - to cater to what the market wants while playing it safe. Everyone's trying to make a bigger buck.
Just Cause might be the wrong series to ask something new of, but it's still a product of this problem.

When Dan came in, it was exciting because he started doing things - features like MGS and his stupid Punch-Out! shit - that no one else was really doing at the time. Seems like the games sold okay in the west before. Also, these days it's a lot cheaper to release a game, because you can just upload the file to digital store. DOAX is already mostly translated as well, and I don't think fans would mind that much if there was no English voice over.

Being an informed consumer yourself is alright and all, but it doesn't stop other people from getting exposed to the forces that would prefer them to be uninformed. That's part of the reason I watch them too, though. I specifically said I enjoy their sense of humor and the insight that comes with it. I don't think that any of the current crew really work well with each other. Jeff, Brad, Dan, and Drew are all friends and close colleagues, but you'd be blind to ignore that Dan - while talented at telling stories - doesn't know how to play off of others. That's a talent that Ryan had and Vinny learned from Ryan. It's why Jeff-Vinny content became just as good as Jeff-Ryan content over time.
No one else on the site really has the same dynamic as those three did. It's why Mario Party Party turns into hours of the four of them sitting in relative silence, occasionally saying how bored they are by Mario Party, with Dan in his own little world and Jeff trying to make the most of the situation with jokes that no one else tries to pick up on.
Jeff's sense of humor is intact, but he has no one to work with anymore.The site should have disbanded when Vinny left for New York.
