Why do people say Age of Empires 2 is better than Aoe3?
>>
i dunno lol

I think AoE3 really mishandled the time period. If it had been more focused on things like Napoleon, the Seven Years War, or the Dutch Rebellion I would have liked it more.

2 is slower as the game goes on. grand strategy plays a more important role

3 is about micro, timing and composition

i think 3 is a better game for multiplayer, but it lacks a lot of charm, and outside of the home city variations within a civ, there are clearly optimal shipment orders and build lines. it bottles players in to very samey games with just a little surprise.

if there were a 4, i'd like to see more units in the field, more unit tech lines (as in more than one) to increase complexity. starcraft 2 can suck a dick and i wish other rts were not so cornered into following the balance train
>>
>>318446262
This. Rise of Nations is best Age of Empire though.
>>
>leveling up
>home cities
>cards
>XP

nobody liked that shit
>>
Because it is.
>own both
>play AoE2 for years
>stop playing AoE3 after a few hours cause it's shit
How can you say AoE3 is better?
>retarded card shit
>no proper resource gathering, just taking from some stupid carts
That alone makes it garbage. The only thing I liked was the fact that you could do those quests in-game to get "heroes" or extra units/gold, but that's literally the only thing that game did right. It died for a reason.

i did like home cities. having a water deck and fish boom option, or early unit shipments building to critical mass, or defending with a quick wall up and heavy economy deck, or pulling those 2 falcs from home, calling minutemen and spawning 10 janissary when your tc is pressured... it was cool, kind of unique in the rts

3 is better for multiplayer, 2 is imbalanced as fuck. You either play as huns on land maps or vikings on sea maps or don't play at all.

i actually dont think i played with any huns/viking in games i played, but then again I don't play ranked so i imagine it's where all the mlg tryhards are, unranked is pretty chill for the most part pretty good variety in players choosing civs if i had to say

AOE3 came out way too late to make a lasting impression in the RTS genre. It was released when the popularity of such games peaked and was on the decline. Maybe if it came out 2-3 years earlier, it would have been much more memorable game.

On top of that, it's a very mediocre game, it has it's moments but overall it feels like a step back in the gameplay department and some features such as the home cities are not fully flushed out. Other features feel unnecessary and a burden on the gameplay. But my biggest personal gripe is the direction shifting from real historical events and people, to 'characters' specifically designed to fit the scenario.

Bluntly put AOE 1 and 2 had the Scenario's built around the Historical Events and Participants of those event's.

AOE3 for the most part had the Character's built to fit the Scenario. It felt forced and detracted alot from the core of AOE.

Empire Earth did everything that AOE3 should have done and did it much sooner and much better. Except the sequels fuck the sequels.

AOE2 is timeless.
AO3 is forgotten.
Empire Earth is under appreciated.

Empire Earth 2 is in no way shit. Just get a few mods to tweak things, such as unlimited buildings in territory, and it stands up for its predecessor.

In fact, as much as I loved playing the game for dozens of hours, I realize now the game has so many flaws. The AI always cheats to the point where it's unfun, the unit tree is messed up, and the pathing is just bad for an RTS game.

The game is way too stretched out than it should be.

If they ever made an Age of Empires IV, what ages would it cover?

The concept art in the manual for III implied that IV would be a modern-esque game and V would be in the far future.
>>
>>318454537
it's literally never going to happen
>>
>>318445643
I think the switch from historical campaigns to some weird discovery channel thing was one of the problems. That and the card gimmick was too central to the game. A 30 years war campaign would have also been neat.
>>
>>318454537
The 19th-20th centuries.

I want to play as the Chinese during the Opium wars, I want to have a line of musketmen firing upon approaching cavalry. I want a trench warfare map, I want to blitzkreig as germany, I want to command a squad of vietcong in the jungle, I want to invade the falklands, I want to call in AC-130's in desert storm.

I want more flexibility and sidegrades for my troops, like say I could choose to upgrade certain troops from Musketmen to Rifleman. Give my rifleman smokeless powder upgrade. Train Marines with Assault Rifles or Battle Rifles. Give tanks co-axial 50 cals, etc etc.
>>
Well the campaign in AoE3 was terrible, much better multiplayer though.

AOE3 also had some odd comp ability issues from time to time. Much worse than AOE2 has despite the publisher being the fucking developer of its designated OS platform.

And playing online with randoms was laggy as hell, but that might have to do with European internet at the time.
>>
i really liked age of empires 3. colonization of the new world was always more interesting to me than intra-european wars. and i liked how every army in 3 felt different whereas every army in 2 is basically the same apart from the special unit at the castle.

i think people are so reactionary and anti-AoE3 is because they wanted AoE3 to be a reskinned AoE2 and be the same type of hyper-balanced, "build order"-centric game as AoE2.

maybe it's because they're represented wrongly

the mali empire wasn't nearly as advanced as any of the other aoe2 empires and the greatest, most profound contribution from their society was that hideous LITERALLY dirt mosque in Mali. their architectural standards were mud huts. and yet their late game architecture within the game ditches any sort of realistic malian architecture and instead the devs had to find a way to pretend that the malians were advanced so they appropriate north african architecture for their late game. the malians never built anything that looked like this.

Defensive anti-monk based CIV? UU is either inquisitor, or swiss guard. Team bonus is reduced monk tech cost, Tech could be a bonus to halberds, or increased relic gold income, or something like that. Get most of the tech tree, minus horse archer and archer stuff. Sound about right?

But Saracens are a very complete civilization, maybe a little bit lacking on the early game, but good luck trying to stop a fully boomed Saracen, having elite zealot mamelukes and heavy zealot camels, hand cannoners, mass hussars, bombard cannons, monks and siege onager.

If you have The Forgotten, the Magyars are very strong. They have an almost complete tech tree. Their UU is a Hussar, with almost knight stats, for only food.
Gotta go with Byzantines for best new player civ though. I guess they don't get bloodlines for a reason.
>>
>>318466167
It's highly contextual. On a water maps, the Vikings are king. On an easily walled map defensive and late-game civs have the advantage. On open maps, Huns, Mongols and other cavalry archer civs are gods.

Generally speaking, I think the Mayans are a best civ for new players. They're very versatile and have a great economy bonus.

But the game's actually reasonably balanced, so you should just pick whichever is coolest to you.

On a basic level by just playing the game, not really.
Playing the campaign will give you a good base idea of historical events.
The real fluff is in that delicious, delicious Historical Codex they have on the main page. Just start reading about your favorite Empire, and then you just get drawn in. It's what started getting me interested in (medieval) history.

How are the African campaigns?
I got tired of the Forgotten missions because, in contrast to the vanilla/Conquerors, there seems to be very few missions where you're allowed to build a base and actually do Age of Empires shit. I'm okay with trying to appeal to historical realism, but I'm playing an arcadey RTS of medieval warfare, not Realism Modded Medieval 2. I stopped at the first mission of the Bari Campaign, though Alaric was okay, it was mostly Dracula that pissed me off with so many stupid levels I had to slog through.
And god damn whoever thought that "risk" map for Dracula was a good idea, where the final base was a long route with the width of only 3 units (AI's with mangonels suck), and then there was that indestructible castle on the opposing side of the river.

They should earn interest on all the gold they have.
Like, for every hundred gold in resources they get 1 free gold every few seconds.

On top of that, their team bonus should be that tributes are free.

This way, in team games allied players would send all their gold to the Swiss player so he could rank up that interest. The Swiss end up hoarding and controlling all the gold for their alliance.
