Not to be outdone, Sony has just quietly done the same. Quite how this will affect the games or handling the OS remains to be seen, but more cores has to be a good thing.
News of the unlock came through an update from the developer of audio tool FMOD, released mid-November. "PS4--Added FMOD_THREAD_CORE6 to allow access to the newly unlocked 7th core."
This was later confirmed by Eurogamer, which said not to expect existing games to see any improvement unless the developers specifically patch them for this reason.
We will likely see improvements in the future, but it's difficult to tell currently how much improvement it will be.
We traditionally see an improvement in visuals over a console's lifetime, so maybe this will be the catalyst of that improvement.

Why would they lock a core on the processor out from the factory unless it serves a function that is no longer guaranteed (e.g. for game recording) if a dev needs the resources?
Locking a core at the factory is traditionally done to improve yields on the chip. If you make an eight core processor with the intent to use seven of those in the console, you can use any chip that has no or one bad core rather than throwing out a chip that only has one bad core.

The issue here is that one has to conform to a small battery, a small workable die area and very little heat dissipation while the other, has a constant power source, a lot of space and plenty of airflow.
Sure the PS4/Xbone are weak as shit compared to PC's, but don't make me laugh with this smartphones are more powerful crap.
In fact one of the fastest GPU chips in smartphones today is literally over 1000% slower than the NETBOOK version of the GTX980.

If you distribute the work EQUALLY on the average scenario you can end with even worse performance than single core due to all the mutual exclusion code introduced, unless whatever you distributed was completely unrelated from each other. Which in videogames, isn't the case if you're dividing everything equally.
