I think you don't understand the winding and convoluted, political history of psychology. Among other things, they always debate whenever they revise the DSM over which diseases are actual illnesses and which diseases are even real in the first place. Homosexuality used to be considered a disease, but it was concluded that homosexuals live normal well-adjusted lives and being gay doesn't require treatment, so it's not in the DSM anymore. Meanwhile, the case of transgender is still considered an illness - although some want it stricken - because people still feel it's something that needs professional attention and treatment.
Then once you get past even accepting it as an illness, you get into treatments, and there's evidence that every modern treatment for transgender patients is more destructive than doing nothing at all. Mesmerism might be safer than reconstructive surgery and would be equally as effective at improving a patient's life. Part of the problem is that being transgender is so theoretically uncommon that researchers have never been able to get a good grasp on it.
But now that it's the big popular counter-culture thing, transgender people are practically crawling out of the woodworks. Anyone who realizes they can wear a dress as a man or cut their hair short as a woman is suddenly in some kind of attention-needed existential crisis.
And the thing that's frustrating about this from a clinical standpoint? The same thing has happened with past mental illnesses after Hollywood did movies about them. When a mental illness requires a lot of self-reporting to diagnose, it's easy for people to make themselves interesting by adopting that illness. Dissociative identity disorder is a prime example: after a few movies about it came out, having multiple personalities was all the rage. Even celebrities were doing it. Then it fell out of public vogue and reported cases have dropped off.

I do not support bottom surgery/srs/nadswapping. The rate of happy outcomes for that is almost nil, and that's where a lot of the increased suicide rates come from. Everything is working at least okay untill they take the final step and then it's just downhill. First it's post surgery depression because the body thinks it has a huge wound.
