The 'can't escape' flag is set for bosses, but it doesn't turn off in that one room. So if you encounter a normal enemy the flag is still on.

Had the same thing happen and I just used a gameshark code. Apparently, Yuffie's affection points can't exceed 30 until she joins the party, so even when farming her encounter sequence you can't let the others' points get higher than ~37, I think. It's a real drag because it implies Cloud and Tifa do lewd stuff if Tifa's affection is >50 in the scene under the Highwind. Therefore, it's impossible to get that version of the scene along with Yuffie or Barret's Gold Saucer date without cheating.

Like I said, 4 is arguably the last one with very heavy Western design. On one hand, you have Edward, Kain, and Cecil (beautiful knights were a thing in Europe) and then on the Japanese side you have Edge, Yang, and Palom/Porom. After that it got more and more blatantly Japanese with each game. I feel like 4 was the real turning point.
