I'm talking on more meta terms, what part of Link's design is immediately identifiable to even the casual observer? Really there's no reason for him to even have the elf ears because hylians in-universe don't have special traits and are as diverse as normal humans, but it's there because the elf ears was part of the character's design as a shorthand way of associating him with the stereotype.
Look at this screenshot from Zelda 1. Look at the old man. Is he hylian? Why doesn't he have big elf ears like Link does? The reason is they didn't think of that when making the game. But they did think of specifically making Link an elf boy with HUGE elf ears because of the stereotypes associated with elves. That's why Link always looks young and pretty, because regardless of the in-universe justifications (which can change with each game), his CORE CONCEPT is that he's an elf boy.Yes I'm aware they gave everyone elf ears as early as the second game, doesn't change my point.
