The reason the Drake Sword is a crutch is because it has high damage, but no scaling. If you level up Strength or Dexterity, you are not going to get anything more out of the Drake Sword. Because you don't benefit from leveling combat stats, you don't have access to a lot of the game's arsenal.
If you want something common, reliable, and strong, try the Claymore. It's near where you got the Drake Sword, so you might already have it, actually. It's a bit more investment, but it's worth it.

Not many weapons scale well at low levels, but regular weapons are upgraded easier than dragon weapons, which helps a whole lot at low levels when you lack the stats to benefit from scaling.

Zweihander is great because it stuns large enemies likegiant skeletons.
Otherwise just keep on top of parrying & equip the right shit for the area/enemies.
Using the drake sword while you level up your combat stats is perfectly fine, just keep in mind you won't be able to repair it without rare/expensive items, so use a normal weapon for junk enemies.
If all else fails and you feel like you're slipping away from the game,use cheat engine to reverse all consequences of dying. If you do that, you can start supporting the community by hosting invasions too- no reason to fear death means you might as well go human and fight to the end whenever you fancy. Cheating can help the community, not just hurt it.

Don't fight the Ogres. Just lure them off edges.
Fight the normal orcs one at a time.
Also there's a second path to Blight town. Go through Dark Root Basin. Then Valley of the Drakes. You'll have to dodge some Drakes. Then go to Blight Town. And this path lets you skip 75% of Blight Town. It's the preferred path.
You can get a key there that lets you go from Firelink, to New Londo, then Blight Town.

Even with low stats and shitty scaling, most weapons will match or beat the Drake Sword by +7, which should be instantly obtainable at the start of the depths when you get the large ember. With the large shards in the depths and blighttown, +8 or even +9 should be possible before Quelaag even with shitty RNG on crystal lizards.
Another easy weapon upgrade that takes a tiny bit of grinding is that the leeches in blighttown drop green shards. Semi-rarely, but when they drop it's in packs of 5. Take 10 green shards to the wizard in the cell below firelink outside of new londo, and convert a +5 weapon into +5 magic. Even with no int for scaling, this will be stronger than a +10 weapon with much less effort, and Quelaag is weak to magic on top of that. There are only like 3 enemies in the base game resistant to magic actually. With low stats, eventually you'll want a lightning weapon, but magic is really good even on non-mages for a while.

The push was really fucking good in DeS. It uses very little stamina and can, a lot of the time, be followed up with an attack. The push with a fist weapon is the fastest push in the game. The push counts as an attack, allowing you to deal your buff's damage by pushing. By buffing his fist's weapon, he's dealing rapid amounts of damage by pushing.
A similar tactic is Katana Pushlock, which you would buff your right hand katana, push with it, then strike with the offhand (because it's faster and cancels the animation), and then push again.
