Why does /v/ hate this game?
Mostly the junction system and the contrivance relating to the foster home. Personally I liked the junction system though and wasn't as bothered by the contrivance.

So, there's literally no reason to level up. As long as you Draw spells to attach to your characters and junction GF's, you can roll into every boss fight at the bare minimum level of 7 and not have any real trouble. It's stupid.

Disc 2 comes around and everything got worse all at once. It's hard to describe. It's like one team did disc 1 and another did disc 2. Horrible. I never finished it.

I played it not too long ago and I had a lot of fun breaking it without resorting to playing the card game, ended up traveling the world for the sake of the adventure just to see what monsters I'd find and what they'd give me that I can refine or steal. I love the world and set pieces too, fisherman's horizon and balamb have an incredibly relaxing mood and shit like hijacking a train to kill the president with your high school pals is really unique if nothing else.

I didn't finish VI, Sabin is probably my favorite FF character gameplay wise. I made it to the point where the whole world got rekt by Kefka, and I just lost interest after wandering around for the rest of my party for a few hours.
I watched my older brother play almost all of VII on the PC at launchin 1998, was my first Final Fantasy experience. Played it myself maybe 3 or 4 years later before I played any of the others.
I want to play IX and XII, IX because everyone says it's a throwback to the old FFs, and XII because it takes place in Ivalice, and I loved FFTA so much. I grew up a PC gamer so the only JRPGs I experienced were the ones my brother bought(FF7) and emulated(Chrono Trigger and Earthbound). Oh, and then there's Golden Sun.

That is my real beef with 8. Its not boohoo combat or anything like that. I think it tried a lot of cool new things in the series.

I thought the whole Rinoa - Squall love story was pretty interesting when considering the role of sorceresses throughout the game. You've been told throughout that sorceresses were these incredibly dangerous entities; that the world at some point was literally just nations being led by different sorceresses just killing each other for decades / centuries. That they did this because they had an almost unshakeable grip on the people; you can actually see this during the assassination mission, where the Galbadian president is about to make a speech / show off their cool sorceress in the form of Edea. Not only does she slaughter him in the most horrific way possible in full view of the entire capital city, they actually go wild, cheering for more. I thought that was a really obvious way of showing the iron grip that a sorceress had on whole groups of people.
As soon as Edea wants a bodyguard, we get Seifer, who went from a jackass who liked to bully people in the cafeteria to little more than a puppet (or knight). If I remember correctly, Squall pretty much does a 180 towards Rinoa when she gets the sorceress powers and ends up in the hospital for a while. Now he just can't get enough of her, and stays at her bedside 24/7. He actually picks her up and tries walking all the way to Esthar by foot. He even asks himself just what in the fuck is he actually doing; I always just sort of figured it was the sorceress' influence at work. Even on the subconscious level, they find someone who will protect them, even if they don't realize they're doing it against their will.
That was just my interpretation of the story though. I thought it was cool that the main characters weren't immune from being manipulated to that level, assuming that was what Square had in mind when writing everything.

1. It came off the heels of FF7, one of the most acclaimed RPGs of all time. It did not portray the same merits.
2. The junction and weapon upgrade systems were convoluted and counter-intuitive. It turned the whole game into an endless rotation of scavenger hunts for obscure item drops, drawing magic spells from enemies, then being forced to never, ever use them.
3. The story was based around the novelty of Bringing Romance to Final Fantasy and the love story was hamfisted. There was no reason for Squall and Rinoa to be in love and nobody cared that they were.

Yet there they are, head over heels with the new sorceress. The only explanation I can think of is that they really have a powerful grip on the minds of the people. Not even Seifer or Squall are immune; everyone will do whatever the sorceress wants. You can't even truly remove their powers in the FF8 universe; Esthar thought it was safer option to just put Adel in the deep freeze than risk killing her and having the possibility of someone even worse inheriting her powers.
Even when you're controlling the B team through the sewers after the pres gets killed, there's a CG cutscene where people are loving every second.

Emo Cloud is a myth following release, like shrine maiden "Aerith." Neither ever existed.
Cloud begins the game pretending to be a badass mercenary that doesn't care about anyone, anything and only wants to get paid. At the end of Midgar he's become more concerned with saving the planet, but mainly because of his relationship with Sephiroth and missing chunks of his past.
When he finally does own up to the fact that he's been trying to live Zack's life the whole time, he's a jibberish pile of lifestream poison. That's the closest he ever gets to being "emo."
After he recovers, he starts acknowledging that he's weak and isn't sure what needs to be done, but that they need to persevere anyway. That's his whole arc: pretending to be someone you're not, failing, acknowledging your weaknesses and facing them despite them.
The emo thing never existed, just like how Aeris was kind of a bitch that only cared about having a good time unless a life or death situation came up, and enjoyed belittling or teasing others when they got 'grumpy.' She was Flanderized into someone that never existed too.
