this got me thinking, how could developers make shmups appeal to more people?

the obvious answer would be to keep costs down as much as possible so you can sell it for $5

also it seems like games with easy difficulty options can do pretty well on steam

but even then, the average person doesn't give a shit about being able to 1cc a game, so they see less value in the game since it can be beaten so quickly. really can't think of a way to overcome that though
>>
>>318322763

Literally almost every shmup has the best vidya music. It's impossible to list them all. The only way to list them is by naming companies, pretty much.

So Konami, Taito, Technosoft, Irem, Toaplan, CAVE (pre-PGM), Nichibutsu, and more.

And this isn't even in particular order, though my personal favorite lately has been all of Metal Black.

1. Item Shop with Ship Customization like Mars Matrix and Ginga Force. Have components able to be either purchased or found by hitting secret spots in the stages. Ship Customization changes the physical look of the ship and can have its colors altered.

2. Selectable pilots with Create-A-Character slots available. Have their faces and those of bosses be visible in auxiliary windows in the game, like Otomedius. However, unlike Otomedius, have the characters actually fucking react to things going on in the game. Have them look to the left or right when things are getting shot down in those directions, have their faces scrunch up when squeezing through bullet layers, have them freak out on taking damage.

3. Have the backgrounds do something other than exist. If the background is some kind of factory setting and ships get shot down over it, have chain reactions of explosions on the factory background occur based on what the downed ships impact when they come down.

4. Have a mode like RS Saturn as well as having no life counter to stop play. Allow the player to grind levels as well as always get to the end as long as they want to. Give a tally at each end showing how many lives they would have lost, and compare progress to past plays.

5. Allow at least one camera angle which would essentially be over-the-shoulder third person.

tldr - Give as many RPG trappings as possible in alternate play modes as necessary. Give characters the players will want to identify with. Get them comfortable with the idea of playing a shooter and let them decide if they want to go for legitimate accomplishments after they get over the grinding and other bullshit trappings.

Too distracting, the less shit going on in the background the better.

>5. Allow at least one camera angle which would essentially be over-the-shoulder third person.

Under Defeat had some camera angles like that. They were mostly for show as the game was practically unplayable like that.

>Too distracting, the less shit going on in the background the better.
The point is to appeal to casuals. Casuals could not possibly care less about playing a game against a featureless black void in the background. The sensation of having all the explosions and chaos occur in the foreground while the background is a static wallpaper image feels artificial and disconnects immersion. Casuals want to feel like they are totally wrecking shit in the midst of a giant war, so give it to them.

>Under Defeat had some camera angles like that. They were mostly for show as the game was practically unplayable like that.
Two dimensional planar movement feels entirely too restrictive to casual players who play 99.9% of everything else in a 3D setting. When I was working at a game store and I had Mars Matrix set on the demo display, the most common reaction I heard people say out loud is "Oh, it's -this- game", as if they had played it before (and no, they hadn't, because I had the Japanese version before it was released in the US). I also heard a child say MM was "one of those games where you can only move up down left and right". Again, the point would be that this would be an alternate allowable camera view or mode which is meant to entice casuals to even play the game at all. If they like the game enough to play more beyond using it, great. If not, at least they might have felt compelled to try it as opposed to all the shmups on Steam now and otherwise which only a few thousand people buy (which are the same few thousand people who buy all of them).
>>
>>318328768

Reverse. A shmup with non shmup modes tacked onto it.

Of all the people who still praise Radiant Silvergun to this day, how many of them do you think never bothered to play the game in any mode other than Saturn mode?

Casuals want to fill bars, mode in three dimensions, and never be challenged. I'm just trying to answer the question as best as I can.

The other shorter of response that, by nature of the genre, it is impossible is just as valid.

Shmup newbie here
How do you know when to bomb in a game like Mushihimesama? Got the game recently and everytime I die I feel like all my bombs are wasted.

Also, so far I have played Gradius 1 (NES), Gradius 3 (SNES), Hydorah and Mushihimesama. What other games should I get into my collection for the near future? I like both vertical and horizontal styles so far.
>>
>>318336516
Just bomb when you feel uncomfortable or plan it so you use them in segments you suck/hate. It's better to waste bombs than to die with them unused.
>>
>>318336516
Treat the bomb like a panic button and as if you have unlimited stock. The more you play, the more you'll know when you're in too much thick and need it. It's important to keep playing and see as much of the game as possible in the mindset that you are trying to reach the end in the single credit.

Look for Crimzon Clover on Steam.
>>
>>318336516
If you're a newbie, every time is a good time to use a bomb. Whenever you think "oh shit I'm not gonna make it", use a bomb.

Part of becoming good is using bombs less and less often since they lower your potential score gains, but it's still better to bomb than to get a game over.

As for games, Crimzon Clover is pretty cheap on Steam and also excellent. There's also Ikaruga which is quite popular.

Fuck. The mechanics and design of that were so insane. The ability to like parry incoming shots by swinging weapons you'd ripped out of enemies. Fuuuuuuuuuuuck.

And failing that you could punch out hulls with the manipulator arm and change your thrust.

Too ahead of its time for its own good.

And the soundtrack.

How the fuck do you get good at this genre? My friend recommended Radiant Silvergun and Mushihimesama Futari and I have no clue how people do it. It's so hard to focus with so much going on. Any tips on how to git gud?

Eyes on your ship when shit gets real so you can actually dodge with precision. Other than that, just practice.

Make 4th dimensional pocket shit, default parry bounces shit back, bomb+parry stores whatever it is and is thrown back as bomb with priority over enemy bullets
Villager's curahzy space program
>>
>>318340701
Correct. Also make sure bullets follow the path that they are shot. I don't know really how to explain it but if a bullet is shot in a certain direction make sure it goes in that direction and doesn't slightly drift to left or right.

Samidare does something sorta like that. Your shield absorbs enemy bullets. But yeah, I can go for parry but parry/store isn't really in the books. I've already made a game design and I've a composer for the game as well.

https://soundcloud.com/nostoppingepoch/sets/myshmupost

Really great stuff. Anyway, I think the parry idea is really cool so I'll probably use that.

People who play for score just think of the number. Like that's all that matters, just increasing the number. You're playing with a different set of rules, that's what playing for score is. You're playing a game of tee-ball, I'm playin Home Run Derby.

I mean you play however you want if you think that's fun, ruining the game. Just go ahead and ruin it. You can pretend you like it if you want. I won't stop you from pretendin.

Just keep on playin tee-ball.

Not from steam, just download the arcade ROM. I don't particularly like the steam version, and I've read a few others complain about graphical glitches and the such. Worth the trouble, fantastic entry.

Bullet Sponges

Sine Mora is an example of what not to do
>>
>>318348575
Regular enemies or the bosses? Or both?
>>
>>318348652
regular enemies

Sine Mora's problem is that if you had no power ups, everything was a bullet sponge.

It's an issue of timing, in that you don't want the player to be bored fighting some small guy for longer than a second if that. With bosses, the same issue applies but with bullet patterns. You don't want the player dodging the same thing for about 30 seconds, you want to mix it up and apply pressure, and that's where multt-stage boss fights are almost always seen in shmups.
>>
>>318348652
Both
Having the bosses in Nanostray 2 last for like 4 minutes just repeating the same bullet patterns with little variation got tiring.
>>
>>318348990
Gotcha. How many hits per regular enemy would you say is good?

>>318349110

Just go play Mushi and Crimzon Clover to see how it's done. You'll gleam much more information from studying the source material directly than asking for suggestions here and there. Honestly, if you want to make a good shmup you should already be intimately familiar with good shmups.

I am but I'm not just copying 1-to-1 what my favorite SHMUP does, you know. And besides, there's also developer blindness. I might think I'm doing things right but getting reminders from the crowd can still prevent things that I might've forgotten/not realized while working on the game, you know?

>>
>>318350270
>I am but I'm not just copying 1-to-1 what my favorite SHMUP does

Don't copy it, improve on it. Crimzon Clover takes a lot of inspiration from Cave shmups and it ain't a bad game because of that. Unless you have a brilliant new idea for a mechanic or gimmick that's never before seen, you're going to end up referencing other shmups anyway.

>there's also developer blindness. I might think I'm doing things right but getting reminders from the crowd can still prevent things that I might've forgotten/not realized while working on the game

Get other people to test your game and give you feedback. Developing a game entirely on paper is not easy, a lot of things that seem like good ideas might turn out terrible when actually implemented, and vice versa.
