Sometimes it's nice if the dev throws in creative achievements to give you a challenge run. Like doing a run where you only use pistols, or beating a game without saving or stuff like that.

But usually it's just boring shit like "kill 50 enemies", "beat chapter 1/2/3/4/5", "beat the optional boss"

99% of the time I don't care for them but I have defenetly done shit I would have never done in a game in order to get them, I've also used them as an excuse to replay certain games. Xcom for example, all my playthroughs have been based on getting the achievements for it. I use them for my own interest not to show others

These are more useful for the developer than anything else.
They can use them to determine stuff about the players or the game.
Like, if there's a huge drop off from chapter 3 completion to chapter 4 completion, maybe the difficulty jumps too much in that part of the game, or the quality just goes to shit at that point.

In a way I hope one day Steam will implement a use for them like they did on a summer sale years ago.

But considering how easy is to cheat for them that may never happen again. You'd think that would encourage them to implement better anti cheating methods but fuck that.

Maybe one day or maybe never. But I’ll be waiting. I also like some of the challenges they provide, but no doubt they are useless most of the time.

I was one of the first people on my WoW server to get the Over 9000 achievement, as well as Battlemaster, and I got the Violet Proto on the first day possible. As an achievement whore who had 100 mounts and killed all of the rare mobs... I can say that achievements are FUCKING RETARDED.

WoW is the only game I was a real achievement whore in, and the feeling is completely empty. It is really just something for you to put time into. The only achievements I would say are worth trying for are things that require a great amount of skill. Any time sink achievements are just garbage and should be avoided.

Before achievements the sense of achievement came from doing something on a whim. I still find things like that to do. It doesn't matter if there was a reward, but it gave you bragging rights. When it lead to an easter egg or hidden bonus, it was even better.

This is was why I hated achievements from the beggining. It meant the developers intentionally designed something and egg you on to do it, rather than natural curiosity.

It doesn't matter how many years you've had steam because trading cards have only been a thing for about one year.

And I've only received booster packs for games that I've completed all my card drops for. You don't have to be playing the game to get the booster pack, you only have to have played it long enough that you can no longer get cards from it.

Achievements are just detail that might sometimes give something to do.

Data mining or gathering gameplay metrics.

For example, developers know that only something like 10% of players will finish their game, so now they frontload development.

Giving you something to work towards while not actually giving you a real reward.
>>

Going for achievements is as pathetic as doing an ironman run

Its just a bunch of superficial, self imposed challenges. Nothing wrong with it, especially if you're having fun with it
>>
>>318308148
in many indie games it's because people get them in bundles and never play, or only play them for a minute and say "fuck it" after five minutes. because every dev thinks they're a real fucking artist special snowflake and has to make some bullshit, slow intro or other boring tutorial, when they could have just thrown the player into the game instantly

in the case of cave story it's probably because everybody's already played the original a dozen times before + with its achievements appeared on steam.

I, for example, don't have any achievements for HL2 and HL2E1, because I played them before they had achievements. I got 100% on EP2.

I also got Heartbreaker in Portal only recently, because for some reason it never unlocked when the game was still fresh, even though I completed it like three times then. I replayed it recently and got it no problem.

also, I had a dozen achievements with 0.5% or less, but apparently people giten gut and now my best is 0.67%
>>
>Be part of the 5% actual hardcore / oldschool players on /v/
>Still like muh cheetos because challenges are fun but i'm not autistic enough to set my own arbitrary achievements (i realize the contradiction) nor i'm doing them without being given evidence that i've managed to do it (even though i won't ever brag or mention).

>>318306485
I've got New Vegas as a gift but it ran like shit on my potato, so I just got it on my 360 instead.

So that's a reason.
>>
>>318308147

For Mountain Blade it's the opposite. If you enable cheats in the launcher you won't get achievements, but some mods have built in cheats and using them doesn't disable achievements.
There are some ridiculous achievements I got this way.

Only liberal pansy ass millennials care about achievements, it's a way for the to gain insta gratification for uselss shit like "collected 5 of this this shit" or "kill all pidgeons on this map".

I don't know why but they probably think this type of shit makes them a better gamer or some shit.
>>
Truth: Achievements is a sly and clever way to do stat tracking. Developers don't actually think starting a new game is an achievement, it's to see who actually bought the game and is connected online, also applies to who actually reached the ending. Too bad most of you are too dumb to realize this and go back to complaining about why developers think starting a new game is an achievement at all.
>>
Achievements don't apply to me, I just don't feel any accomplishment for getting 10 extra points to an arbitrary value or some shitty reward without function that I can show other people.

I have one friend who is a complete achievement-whore and every time he talks about his achievements I ask him "what do you get out of it?" and he has no reply, but he'll still keep on grinding for them.

But let's take World of Warcraft as an example. What difference does 5000 or 15000 achivements points make? It's not that they get any enjoyment out of the actual hunt, but it's the completion they chase, the little "you did this meaningless task, have some impersonal recognition and 10 meaningless points" which I don't understand at all.
Achivement points have no intrinsic value, they are inherently meaningless, and I can't see the appeal.
>>
>>318313152
You actually get a mount, minipet or a title if you do enough specific achievements in WoW though
Sure theres a ton of filler achievements too but most of them can be achieved accidentally and it adds a little more oomph to the event that occurred
>>
>>318313152
>"you did this meaningless task, have some impersonal recognition and 10 meaningless points"
Well that's called video games, and contrary to /v/ opinion, it always has being that way, pacman is just doing a pointless task over and over for a high scores of points that don't matter

You could superficially analyse every task like that. Reading is just a pointless task of reading words in a collection of words. Watching movies is just staring at a screen for extended periods of time.
The content matters.
>>
>>318314139
Try finishing the games in your backlog with achievements so that number goes up then.

fun

if I enjoy the game I like to go around and 100% it, i've been doing that since I started playing vidya, long before there was any trophy/achievement for the feat. i'd argue that the majority of /v/ does that with vidya they love(d).

i know there are people who play games strictly for the achievements, that I don't understand. but trying to 100% a game you enjoy is part of the fun of a game for me.
>>
The point isnt to get the "congragulations!" but to do the challenge which in of itself is fun. Or should be anyway.
>>
>>318313152
Achievements in WoW actually give you in-game rewards. Special mounts, titles, pets, tabards, recpies, toys, etc.

When I got my Professor title I made a warlock named Plum
>>
>>318314453
>The content matters.
And in the case of most video games the content is really shallow, or you think that pac-man is some incredibly deep experience instead of the same fucking maze over and over?
>>
>>318314139
Maybe you should play your games instead of just building a backlog then
>>

>>318312225
>you're all fooled; such sheep; oh my!

Fucking every 4chan nerd ever

I do achievements if it's "get X score" or "do it in X time"

If I consider them as an added layer of difficulty, then I may do them

Whatever the devs may get out of that idgaf
>>
>>318300545
>what's the freaking point of getting achievements?

To trick children into thinking they accomplished something great so the developers dont have to implement actual unlockables. Seriously, the new generation actually go for rewardless achievements and then are supposed to be taken seriously.
>>
>>318300545
Excuse for lazy developers to add inane content.

[ ] Do this boring sit 100 times.
[ ] Collect 1000 of this useless shit.
[ ] Do this extremely hard thing for nothing.

Ad infinitum.

This. plus I always enjoy achievements that you get when you beat hardest difficulty settings or do some difficult tasks. I also like some fun challenges, like for example carrying a garden gnome from the beginning of the game all the way to the rocket in HL2 Ep2.
Collectible achievements also help you find out whether you have explored everything in the game or not.

If not for achievements, I would've probably not bothered getting all miracles / pyromancies etc in DaS1 or 2. So yes, they can add some level of replay ability. Make players do stuff they otherwise wouldn't.
