Hats were added to the game, many people just started idling in servers made for idling (having the game run 24/7) so they would gain more hats.
Valve deleted all hats from idlers and gave those unique and untradable halos to those who did not idle according to whatever program they used to detect it.
Manchildren got mad about losing virtual items they "cheated" for.

Back in the day, you could just sit in a TF2 server and get hat drops nonstop. You didn't have to play the game, just be in a server. In fact you could actually launch multiple instances of TF2 in text mode and still idle. Some people did this to get shittons of hats.
So for people who went full retard and had like 50 instances of TF2 running to try and get maximum hattage, valve removed the hats that they'd gotten via super idling, and gave anyone who hadn't used those programs a halo called the Cheaters' Lament that was impossible to get through other means.
So people who cared enough about hats to grind them ended up not being able to get a specific hat. Butthurt ensued.
