It's pretty clear to anyone who frequents these threads that no one actually believes this. People 'say' the game is emotionally taxing, and then can never explain why. They say the game is unique, creative, and fun to play, but nothing it does hasn't been done better years before.
I especially like how people keep pushing the genocide route as being this intense experience, when really, you gain absolutely nothing by playing through it.

It was a really nice game with underused mechanics and investing characters that kinda made you feel accountable for your actions. It's nothing completely new at all and I didn't really feel that much until I did the Genocide Run after Neutral and True Pacifist. Just seeing the great differences in character interaction and overall atmosphere were enough to make me tear up a bit in the fight with Sans when he tries to spare you. Overall I loved it, just wish that Toby had more time to work on it to extend it a bit over 6 hours to give more time to develop more feels.

It isn't about the characters and plot themselves; Undertale is about holding the player accountable for their actions. It's not supposed to make you cry, it's supposed to give you satisfaction for having done good and compunctions for having done evil. The characters are written competently enough that the player can care about them, but they don't have much depth.
