If you have a PS3 or 360 knocking around get DW7 and play Chronicles Mode. THAT shit was good.
And if you don't mind old as fuck eye-strainy graphics play Samurai Warriors 2 and have a crack at the infinite tower. That was fucking god-tier. Hell even the mercenary mode thing in Samurai Warriors 4 was pretty good. And double hell Adventure Mode in Hyrule Warriors was bretty damn fun too.
Ambition Mode was just trash. If you enjoyed that, all of the above will be like fucking gold dust to you.

Almost done with DW8, just need to do the other level for Zuo Ci and Dong Zhuo, but they both seem like the most boring fuckers around, I can't have fun with either playstyle to the point where I'm thinking of just steaming through their levels with the explosive halberd instead

Just play through the stories, you get a feel to the different characters there, and mix up the secondary weapon until you find ones you like, after you do that look for who originally has that weapon as their main.

What strategy? If you yourself don't go into defensive battles you can't defend, if you don't go into offensive battles yourself you'll generally never win.
You can't play these games like RotK strategy games because they never fucking allow for any real strategy, you make resource numbers increase and maybe entice some officers from other armies but in the end it doesn't do jack shit. You are forced to still play it like a generic ass musou because that's what it ends up boiling into, with all the promise of the strategy layer never living up to shit because it has an absolute minimal impact on the gameplay.

Because the strategy layer is fucking pointless and is just there to eat up your time and has no impact on the gameplay, hell the strategy portion is damn near fucking mindless, there's options I feel I should be able to employ in every one it just doesn't give me the option to, either because such an option doesn't exist when it feels completely obvious, or it's some sort of RNG event bullshit.
I like regular musous, I like Koei's heavier strategy games, and I've liked some of their hybrids of strategy and other genres like Inindo, but when it comes to them fusing musou and war strategy they always leave the musou part as is and put the thinnest sheet of paper on top and write "Empires" on it and you just put your fist straight through it to play the game because it's too fucking fragile and has zero substance, and also your disgusted because it's annoying because you also got a paper cut.
