The suppression field is small beans compared to what else the Combine are doing on earth. Memory alteration/removal, bio-engineering, ect.
>>
These games introduced everything negative design tenet that eventually killed FPS outright.

-linear map design
-lack of verticality
-zero secrets
-braindead puzzles
-braindead protagonist
-scripted oh-so-smart 'interactive' sequences where you follow a character telling you stuff

god i hate half life games so fucking much.

that's why it was a huge success and why evryone copied it, right?

I don't think i need to explain why denying people the ability to mate is a scary thing

May as well just go and kill yourself right now because you're going to die eventually anyways.
>>
>>318287979

That's how this stuff happens.

Hell, go play all the resident evil games, and realize that reason that resident evil is shit nowadays is because of Resident evil 4, a GREAT game.

Those things aren't inherently bad on their own, but they're bad when they're repeated over and over ad nauseum to appeal to the lowest common denominator.

You can't tell me that CoD doesn't control like butter, it has since CoD2.

The first few were absolutely groundbreaking and revolutionary. Obviously you weren't old enough to be playing games when MW or COD1 came out, but they were amazingly fresh and fun compared to the stagnant garbage that was FPS games the time.
These days the Devs have fired everyone remotely talented and are just churning out copy paste trash and living off the brand, but the first few games were amazing.

Bait, but:

>-linear map design
Debatable. The games aren't open world, so you are supposed to get from point A to point B. However, many of the segments in 2 were very wide open. They weren't just forcing you down a hallway.
>-lack of verticality
Complete bullshit. There are plenty of examples of vertical segments in both 1 and 2.
>-zero secrets
Also complete bullshit. There were plenty of hidden ammo drops/powerups littered throughout all the games.
>-braindead puzzles
Compared to what exactly? The second game was all about showing off their physics engine in the puzzles, and most of the puzzles were fun to do. None of them were on the level of Bioshock Infinite or Undertale in terms of how fucking braindead stupid they were.
>-braindead protagonist
The protagonist doesn't speak and doesn't have a personality because you're supposed to be the protagonist. The series was praised for doing this.
>-scripted oh-so-smart 'interactive' sequences where you follow a character telling you stuff
Another thing the series was praised for. Things like the entire intro sequence to the first game hadn't really been seen before at the time.

Try harder.

So...

Is Half-Life franchise completely abandoned?

Postponed? Postponed until Gabe feels like continuing the franchise?

Being worked on right this minute?

To be perfectly honest I think it has been abandoned and they have absolutely zero interest left in it.
>>
>>318290906
Its been over 2 years since the last word. Since a flicker of light shone one last time in the darkness.

It is time to let go...

Lel, you are one colossal faggot m8e. Stop acting like a woman and accept that you were totally wrong.
>>
>>318290906
I'd say it's been abandoned because they don't want to risk a Duke Nukem Forever incident. Better to just shelve the project forever and pretend it's dead than release something that can't hope to live up to the fanboys unrealistic expectations.
>>
>>318288267
>It also suppresses sexual urges
Sounds like Germany.
>>
>>318290906
They're still working on it, that much they have confirmed. They simply just don't talk about it because the project has gone through multiple scrap/restart cycles and don't have anything concrete yet.
Only when the game is in a "ready" state, and is in the final stages of production, will it be revealed to the world. But when this will happen is anyone's guess.
>>
>>318291080
They are still more popular than the old CODs, how is that so hard to understand, you thick sack of shit.
>>
>>318291276
stop it anon, its dead. They had one more shot at last years e3, their last chance to show something off and they did nothing.

Gabe is rich, so are many of his developers. They have long stopped working on it, they will cozely retire in their large mansions, make families and quietly live out the rest of their lives while taking vacations.

Its over.
>>
>>318291360
You're still going with the damage control? Jesus, that is one hurt butt.
>>
>>318288379
I think the cruelty is more due to the fact that it's frightening that the whole of mankind suddenly just stopped being interested in the one constant that we've had throughout history. Like, it essentially neuters everyone all at once AND makes them incapable of finding anyone attractive. It strips away all of it, hand holding, kissing, and it does it to everyone.
>>
>>318291517
Your retarded argument that COD is successful "because it was good before MW2" despite selling much more during and after MW2, was completely BTFO. You should kill yourself now.
>>
>>318291143
na, that's a bullshit cop out to blame the fan's unrealistic expectations. valve is the ones who decided they had to add amazing revolutionary things in each new game and set themselves up to follow nukem's path. fans were fine with the episodes and mostly just want valve to finish the damn story. valve showed they already had an intriguing story with interesting characters and villains. at this rate, no one will give a shit by the time it comes out because it will be a whole new generation.
>>
>>318291454
You're being a retard, Valve themselves have stated multiple times in interviews that they aren't going to reveal anything until they have a concrete idea of what the game is and are in the final stages of production.
They do this to avoid making everyone go crazy every time there's a revolution and the project is scrapped and development restarts for the X'th time.

Each E3 isn't their "last chance" to do or show something. Why should they cobble together an E3 gameplay demo that depicts something that will be scrapped and abandoned 5 months later?
Just stop waiting for it and focus on the now/near-future games coming out instead.
>>
>>318291360

They aren't?

The problem isn't sales, its drop offs in playerbase. MW3 dropped to basically nothing, while MW1 still has a living community.

Black Ops 2 has more players than Ghosts and advanced warfare, and Black Ops 3 has had absolutely no presence
>>
>>318291989
Apparently one their biggest hurdles is how to incorporate motion-capture into a game where characters will follow, look at and gesture towards a player who is free to move.
>>
>>318291989

Consider when episode 2 was released

There has been absolutely no concrete progress since then.

The game is either dead or in an abomination of ideas that will only see the light of day in the same way Van Buren did: as design documents
>>
>>318290906
Didn't the concept artist responsible for all the designs leave the company bc if so there's no point in continuing really.
>>
>>318287979

Quake 2

The Half Life franchise is am emergency plan for when the company (Valve) will start losing money. Imagine when they launch Half Life 3, literally millons of copies will be sold. But also there's the problem of the hype, and it's a big issue, like what happened with DNF: the expectatives are descomunal, but if they fail a bit, the gamers will be merciless

Valve has some unique shoes to fill.

They brought something new to the table with HL and HL2, but there's nothing they can compete with in today's industry with the skill they displayed in the last 2 episodes.

They can't beat Alien: Isolation's performance optimization.
They can't out-sandbox Bethesda.
They can't develop an engine to rival Unreal 4.
They can't model better than The Vanishing of Ethan Carter.
They can't out-write Obsidian.
Oculus beat them to VR while they were clowning around in their offices.

Think of Valve as Triple H. They're just not good enough to be the top guy, so they'll run the company and decide who gets featured, which is just as good to them.

eh, to me sales isn't the only measure of success. Multiplayer games are reliant on not having dead communities, so I consider being unable to actually sustain an active one a sign of failure, especially if previous entries in the series are still alive.

I don't know enough about how people measure success who actually do this for a living, but I think longevity of the playerbase to be a better indicator than how many people buy it.

Source was the steam player tracker that isn't there, I don't know what third party does it now but you can check it out.
>>
>>318291989
No, its fucking dead. These cycles, stages of productions just air. They have nothing, they are making nothing, their creative minds are at a dead end and the only thing that is going forward is their money making machine.

They wont be making games again. The only thing that they will do is perhaps push a little bit further in their steambox horseshit and tinker with their gaeman leenux a bit.

Thats it. Beyond that they are dead. Forget about them already.

>>
>>318292241
Your argument of "It's been a long time so obviously it won't happen" isn't very solid considering there have been plenty of game series with long gaps between games.

>Max Payne 2 - Max Payne 3: 9 years
>X-COM: Apocalypse - XCOM: Enemy Unknown: 15 years (Enforcer and First Alien Invasion don't count)
>Doom 2 - Doom 3: 11 years
>Quake II - Quake 4 (Quake III was just an MP game): 8 years
>Deus Ex Invisible War - Deus Ex Human Revolution: 8 years

There's no debating whether they're making the game or not, they still are working on the game. When it will be formally announced and released is up for debate.

>>
>>318293235

what. All those aren't even comparable

Max Payne 2 - Max Payne 3: Two completely separate companies developed them, Max Payne 3 was not in progress since Max Payne 2

Same goes for Quake 4, X-Com, Deus ex

Doom 3 was also not in production since doom 2, ID was busy making other shit and Doom 2 was the end to the series while Doom 3 was a reboot. There was also a demo, e3 presentations, screenshots, and press briefings on what the game was.

Episode 3 is nothing more than an idea derived from valve's aborted attempt at episodic content. There has been fuck all released in years for what was supposed to be released shortly and valve has said it has no plans on returning to single-player gaming.

>>318293235
yeah, but most of those examples are cash in reboots by other companies. All of those except max payne were done by completely different companies or by companies that had been bought out and restructured or had changed so much since the last iteration of the game as to make it as if the game had been rebooted by another company.
Companies don't let their properties rest that long without making a sequel if they intend to ever do so.

The vast majority of game developers who used to work at Valve are gone now. Almost all of the current employees are there to work on Steam and hardware, not to develop games. Valve has already quietly made the transition from game developer to online retailer with the software development that goes along with that. That's it, that's what they are now.

They don't even have enough people experienced in game development to make something on the scale of Portal 2 or Left 4 Dead again.
