I look forward to the day Adventure Mode finally reaches the level of complexity Dorf Fort mode has, and you're able to make bonds with NPCs and build a fortress together. I want to do fort mode but in a way that gives me a body. Otherwise I start getting that feeling AM had from that short sci-fi horror story. Hopefully some day he stops beating around the bush and lets us dig shit ourselves.

You have a problem when you can pull out a symbol and have it represent over 10 different creatures only differentiated by different shades of gray on the symbol itself.

That's the goal. You're supposed to be able to do everything a Fortress mode dwarf can but more detail has to be retrofitted onto almost every function before it will work. He can only work on one thing at a time.

You will be able to make temples (which your tantruming dwarves can desecrate and get cursed as a result) in Fort mode
You will be able to make libraries along with scholars
Fort mode parties will include singing, dancing, and music
Your dwarves will get drunk if they drink enough
Wandering adventurers will visit your tavern, and it will have its own reputations
Your dwarves have personal needs
People who stay in at your taverns and inns can petition for full citizenship (but they need your approval)
Leisure time overhaul is self-explanatory

He has a weekly schedule and he works pretty much every day. He has a blog that he updates constantly with anecdotes (they're usually pretty interesting) about the newest features, he has a feature/update wishlist he updates pretty regularly, and a bug tracker he uses often. He does a great job of communicating the amount of work he is doing, and it's usually a lot.

You can replicate most of things from dwarf fortress in modded operation flashpoint, save for digging. Terraria has more content than DF and actually reasonably balanced unlike DF which is cage trap to win.

You should really read through the dev log and read about the shit he's adding. A lot of it is going to impact the daily lives of your dwarves and there is a LOT of procedural generation going in and an awful lot of it is going to be directly interactive.

My fort made it a really long time off of wood and stone.

I even had 250 citizens. But I only had a few squads in my military that were all fairly weak with leather armor and they ran out of ammo. Weremole caught one of my fishers and there wasn't a message saying he was infected or anything, so I just assumed Weremole was just an enemy with no real special attributes. Suddenly I have a bunch of Weremoles tearing everything apart.

If only I had traps other than cages.

Build a wall, obviously.
Since it's underground you can construct the wall immediately next to the map edge, meaning you completely block creature spawning in that location.

Do this by making a scaffold of up/down staircases 1 tile away from the edge, so the wall can be build directly on the edge, and from the top openings going down. Why top-down? because if you go bottom-up, creatures can spawn on the wall itself while the space is still unfilled.

be aware this will consume a shitton of stone, so you should absolutely use blocks in your construction to ease the resource cost (4 blocks per raw stone)

The metals you can dig for depend on the type of soil you start your fortress on. I think sedimentary is the best, since that also has a lot of flux stone which you'll need to smelt steel.
