My dad likes to tell a story about some guy named Johann Bekker who is apparently my ancestor. He apparently fought for Austria against the French in the early 1800s, and was captured and pressed into service in the french army. He managed to escape to Britain and changed his name to John Baker. He fought with the British against the French in the Battle of Waterloo and was rewarded for his services with a small island in eastern Canada (not in the sea, in the middle of a huge river). The story goes that he lost that island to a Methodist minister in a game of cards, whose family has owned it ever since. It's still called Minister's Island to this day and it's close to where I live. Of course my dad also just makes shit up sometimes so who knows if there's any truth to the story.
