You don't have to grind much. Focus on getting the really useful skills like ROF UP 1 and Zoom (and maybe some pilot insta-kills) and get some shotgunners, a sniper, a missiler and maybe a mellee fighter.

You'll get 8 characters eventually. In Emma's storyline (my favorite) my main team was usually Kazuki (shotgun/machine gun), Ryogo (shotgun), Emma (missiler), Dennis (sniper), Yun (shotgun), and Marcus (mellee) occasionally.
