You need to run, recruit from villages, hire mercenaries in taverns. Once you get that out of the way, you'll slowly pick it up.
Or you can just use cheats to max your stats and recruit a hundred people+ due to your high charisma, and money cheats to look around and buy the best gear going by what style you want.
