Not really any tips, just play as you like. Although as a rule, stick to good or bad once you have decided which you like most. Neutral/Gray route is challenging and leaves you with the strengths of neither side.
Lightsabers are of course OP, but don't scoff at the value of a grenade when shit get hot.

The rules are based on D20 D&D. So if you've played NWN or similar games you'll find your marks quickly.
Play it on the hardest difficulty because it's extremely easy. (even on hard)
Don't be a suck up, playing the good guy isn't that fun. Don't try to min/max, there's no need for it. Don't try to please everyone, you can influence your companions by being loved or by being hated by them.
Playing an evil bastard is really fun, in both kotors.
Try to level up as much as possible while you're on Taris. It makes the game easier later on.

The game is actually well designed enough that any kind of build you want is viable.
Only real objective advice I can give is if you're melee don't bother with more than one melee feat, i.e. if you have improved or master flurry don't bother using feats to get improved or master crit strike
I guess I could also add crit strike is the highest melee damage output if you build for threat range
other than that though, it's an early bioware rpg so it's actually really well done in all aspects, the only thing I would say don't do is full light side force user, you'll be bored to tears and will end up using other characters more because you won't have any damage output

Use nothing but a vibrosword on Taris, put all your points into single sword skills. Then once you get a lightsabre just spam flurry to win the game
