Never copy sprites, if youre going to do anything, you can take the style, but I wouldnt even overlay it overtop of what you are drawing. Too much of a crutch

I know the rules of drawing if by it you mean reading loomis and watching some vilppu drawings.

but making a maniquin, checking perspective, drawing the muscles and bone structure, doing the clothes flow of action, make the planes and 3D shape of the surface.

Doing all that shit is hard, and that's not counting the painting part.

Being 100% serious here: read How to Draw Comics The Marvel Way. It's great at explaining how to pose your figures, and what their body language signifies. OP's recreation of the Athena sprite is stiff and awkward-looking compared to SNK's original. Her right arm lacks tension, and her left arm is drooped down too low to make it look like she's on-guard. Her legs are buckling under her own weight, like she's off balance. In the SNK original, she's grounded and sturdy. In the original, her feet are splayed out to spread her weight out evenly across her center of gravity, and in OP's they're bunched up. It's not a strong pose at all.

Listen, OP. You STILL have to learn how to draw properly if you're doing sprite work. The method behind creating sprite art may be different from that of drawing normally, but the fundamentals are the same no matter what medium you're working in.

You'll find that you can make much nicer looking exaggerations once you know the basics of human anatomy. OP clearly doesn't so it looks weird as hell.

Know what works, and then stretch that as much as you can, otherwise you end up with awkward looking art.

I wish st0ven's old Spriteart website was still up. It had some really good tutorials for sprites of different varieties. 2DWillNeverDie is still an amazing resource of graphics and tutorials, though. Particularly on making sprites similar to how Capcom did in the mid-90's.

I should add, actually - if you have Manga Studio there's a way to turn some of the pens into binary brushes so you can do pixelart in that program as well. It's great if you're working on backgrounds with perspective.

I haven't done anything for my own games in a long time. This is from last year. I think it's the last thing I made for this project before setting it down and moving on.

There's always going to be inconsistencies. That's just the nature of animation. Even Disney movies are inconsistent as fuck with each frame, but you don't notice it unless you're intentionally looking out for it or have it playing like a slide show.

Avoid perfectly straight lines (horizontal, vertical, and diagonal) on higher resolution work like this. It makes the pose look less organic and more mechanical. The solid horizontal lines on the bottom of her shirt/stomach are particularly jarring and make her seem separated in two at the waist.

Smooth out curves. The outline shape of her legs are especially haphazard and lumpy looking.

Don't outline every single thing in black. First, it makes it look less like a cohesive piece and more like lots of little pieces stuck together. Second, too much black everywhere muddies up the rest of the colors.

Remember, ever pixel and clump of color should be deliberate. This should look like it was built pixel by pixel, color by color, not drawn out with a pencil tool.
