I don't see it being as effective as Mario Maker, good Metroidvania maps are probably much harder to make than good linear levels.

mario maker works because the levels are short bursts that are beaten in 1-3 minutes
metroid maps are enormous intertwining interlocking maze-like puzzles that require thoughtful design like putting power-ups in locations that let you loop back around or circumvent or break through etc etc

I don't think it could work. Metroid games are one intricate thing. Mario maps are short several-minute long maps at best with temporary power ups.
Designing a Metroid map would take much longer, need to know how to properly design a world around power ups.
