Most guilds I ran with did. It was always some system that claimed to be zero-sum but had mystery bonuses that broke the entire thing. Only one guild used Suicide Kings instead. I thought it was neat but that went the way of the dodo the first time a fresh recruit got a weapon an officer wanted for his offspec.
My vanilla guild used DKP. I eventually got kicked for hoarding my DKP during MC and using it all in BWL to get gear before the crybaby officers.

yeah, i horded for weeks upon weeks upon weeks. I was still wearing a few dungeon blues when we cleared MC. Our guild had a stupid DKP system where rather than sharding an item if no one else wanted it they would just give to whoever the raid leader felt needed it the most. Which absolutely destroyed the zero sum system but our GM was too dumb to realize it.
I was showered in loot I paid nothing for.
Then when the bindings of the wind seeker dropped I went all in.

every guild I have ever been in never had a shit loot system, be it dkp or loot council
every time I join a guild it takes me less than a month to get a leadership position and a voice people pay attention to.
dkp works with blind bids and minimum costs for items. loot council is the best but can be completely ruined by retards.
the amount of times I have had to tell people they were an asshole for trying to give their friend loot is frankly embarrassing.
for all of you who didn't get loot when you know you should have, know that I was out there fighting for ya.
We had a system where you didn't bid but items had fixed DKP value, the item was first offered to the person with the most DKP and if he passed it would go down the list

I was in a loot council during ICC, passed on Deathbringer's for weeks as I knew other raiders needed the boost more than I did. When the day finally came that there shouldn't have been anyone else, a fucking fury warrior that just started raiding with the guild bought out the GM for it, and the council was silent the entire time. Funny thing was, the GM was the kind of guy that saw himself as super honorable and respectable compared to everyone else in the game, what a joke. My guild operated on a 'Need first' basis. Gear was distributed to people that needed it the most so everyone was generally on the same level with some priority given to the most important jobs like tanking.
No you couldn't ask for shit for an off gear spec unless no one wanted/needed it as an upgrade.
It was a good system but needs the right people in charge because I could easily see it being abused. We never had any abuse.

Our guild was close knit enough not to use DKP after classic, and during classic we mostly just assigned items to who was the furthest behind and rolled dice for the rest. Dice were great because if someone was disappointed they didn't get something, their anger was redirected towards the dice instead of the loot leader. Sometimes we did give an item to someone without rolls if they did something noteworthy or if they hadn't got shit in a while, nothing worse than raiding for three weeks on bosses you've already cleared and getting nothing to show for it.
Only time I was ever disappointed was when I wanted something in Naxx to complete a set of armor for a certain look. It wasn't a real upgrade for me (Current shoulders were only a few item levels behind), but I wish I would've had some way to bribe the other tanks to allow me to take it anyway. I wound up wearing the healing version during future raids since we didn't have a holy paladin to take them, but it always made people upset because I was gimping myself just to look cool.

My rotation/priority system always had one button because in BC you could just make a macro with enough logic to execute exactly what you needed every 1.5 seconds. Sadly, they removed those either during or after wrath.
