We don't need a reminder everyone knows, but it's still good.
If anything, it's a real tragedy that EA felt the need to slap the "C&C" on there because it could have genuinely started its own good new franchise all by itself. Having "C&C" on the label definitely earned the game not attention but a lot of hatred because it wasn't C&C, but it was genuinely fun so that was too bad.
Of course, later on EA realized they'd accidentally let something fun get released and fixed it by making Generals 2 and C&C4 just to thoroughly murder everything, but it's best not to think too hard about that.

Fun fact, the base game came out uncensored first, but then was pulled from retail shops after being classified as glorifying the ongoing war in Iraq at the time. Then EA just replaced all humans with cyborgs, forced the unit voices through a disortion filter and called it a day.

Generals is a fucking horribly balanced game that is so fucking fun and stupid that it doesn't matter. The campaigns are all fun, and there's 6 of them if you include the expansion. The game is nearly as quotable as Starfox 64, so many memorable and dumb units.

They didn't kill Westwood. Westwood did so.
A pile of rubbish projects that took massive resources and never saw the light of the day is the reason EA shut them down.
You see, both Westwood and Ensemble got to a point when the people in the company got to a point they had enough of RTS games altogether and wanted to do something else.
The former failed, the latter was never even given the choice.
Only Blizzard got out of this by running with WoW... and killing itself anyway as only ever working on WoW killed off the people who made the company great.
That's why Starcraft 2 was designed by the Lead Designer of Westwood Pacific, blanced by the Balance Lead of Relic (the same guy responsible for the balance of Eldar in DoW, go figure) and so on.

Starcraft 2 just follows the classic Activision Blizzard formula of changing the big shot every other patch while keeping the game in a pretty much standard balanced state.
