I hated him as a character but from a gameplay standpoint he was great. I think this is what DmC fans fail to realize. People who have followed DMC have endured steep changes in every game. So long as the gameplay is up to par, people will embrace it.
I actually think Donte could be done well in a sequel if he was given DMC2 Dante's edge. Also his weapons need to do more than just be given to him.
One of DmC's problems was that you just got the weapons after a boss fight. The bosses didn't even use those weapons so they just appeared out of nowhere. Take us back to the days of having to go through a trial room to collect a weapon at the end or have the weapon fit with the level theme or something.

Honestly, if anything, I thought those were the things it kinda had going for it. Enemy design is slightly better since there are more enemies who are aggressive, put up a better defense, enemy AI is pretty good with the Angelos, etc. And with the bosses, I thought Berial, Bael, Echidna, Angelo Credo, and Dante were right up there with DMC3's bosses.
Overall I'd say it were still kinda worse but it's not that big of a dropoff really, and at least it has Nero.

I found that the only good bosses were Credo and Berial. Dante was surprisingly disappointing and the rest of the bosses ranged from bad to mediocre. I liked the Angelos but some enemies, specifically Blitz and Assault Chimera were just a pain and in no way fun.

Dante's not as great as Vergil was thematically, especially since he never goes all out or has any real reason to, but mechanically, the fight with him is great. Most challenging in the game, really, and a lot of fun.
I hope we get a Dante boss where he actually does go all out like Vergil in DMC3.
