Maybe not a 100% but it surely helps a lot. You can see how good it is by playing like 5 matches on For Glory on Sm4sh with and without LAN, if you lag most matches, it's probably your Internet.
Also, /v/ plays FFAs on weekends so you can see how good your connection can handle 4 players that are mostly from the US.

Pretty much, yeah. From a practical standpoint having games like those digital so you don't have to change them is the best way, but from a collector/possessive point of view, having them physical is the way to go.
Personally I have Smash and Splatoon physical but if I had enough money I'd buy them both digitally, that's what I did with New Leaf.
