It's not an RTS in the traditional sense, more like a realtime tabletop wargame. It is a much more strategic and slow paced experience compared to say starcraft, with results of fights depending on unit positioning instead of counters and APM, and there's no base building. I greatly prefer it to any traditional RTS but it's quite a complex game and your mileage may wary. If you get it, get red dragon because there are people to play it against.

The sequels are iterative, nothing has really been changed between them per se, just more units and mechanics added. Red Dragon has most content and players so it's the one you should play. But if you just want to play single player (though you really shouldn't in this game) the campaings of the first game, European Escalation are worth checking out too.

Yes that's definitely true, but I meant more like there isn't any "infantry beats helicopter beats tank beats infantry" sort of balance, Infantry gets wrecked on open ground but dominates towns and forests, and even when an enemy has a strong unit in the right position you still have multiple methods of efficiently dislodging it, not just a set "counter" unit.

If you're going for dollar-per-hour, its a good deal. Visually, its beautiful, and I don't just mean pretty graphics - whenever you're not fighting they know when people will let the camera reposition without being upset and will frame the shot to show you how goddamn gorgeous neo paris is, like when you're climbing up a long ladder and the camera just pans a little upward so you see the cityscape towers. The camera is also always free roaming so you can move it even when it pans, the visual dept is just good at its job.
The rest of the game is a lot of good idea that needed more polish. combat is a mix of batman and killer is dead, its major hangup is that if the enemies are too far away your combo will whiff, unlike batman repeatedly hurling himself across the room to slap a bitch after he's 3 hits into a combo.
Modifying people's memories is one of the major selling points, but its really just boils down to a trial-and-error puzzle scene. The story is ok, its just that the game is really short.
tl;dr for $6 its still good, but its not getting a sequel for a reason

Verdun's not that great. It's not terribleassuming it runs well on your PC, the last few patches completely screwed performance for many people, but it's pretty shallow and has a stupid as fuck playerbase on pub servers. There's a relatively big update coming out soonish supposedly, which is gonna add a "realism mode", you might want to check it out again then, but otherwise I really can't recommend it unless you're really really desperate.

Great game. You don't really need the DLC since they're essentially well polished mods (Napoleon is great for multiplayer since it has the musket gameplay)
Most people recommend you start with the Floris mod. It's the vanilla game with additional units and features (combat camera, improved troop recruitment and camping, etc.)
