I've used google cardboard with the NY times VR app and it was really dissapointing and at the same time annoying and pointless to move your head around while sitting down and relaxing in a chair after a day of hard work
>>
>>317606937
That's because Cardboard is fucking garbage
>>
>>317607093
It's the same as this gear vr but slightly worse i suppose
>>
>>317606754
90% of those people are buying it and expecting oculus-like experiences.

Prove me wrong.
>>
>>317607839
>slightly

You obviously haven't tried both. Cardboard has no standards either so the level of quality varies greatly.

Honestly now, you think John Fucking Carmack has been doing nothing for the past year in the Oculus mobile department if Cardboard is slightly worse?
>>
>>317606754
What is this for? Pc?
>>
>>317608045
John Fucking Carmack is some midget assberger dude who has no idea what it takes to make real quality product
>>
>>317607981
90% of those people buying it are having their first introduction to VR with GearVR. What, by expecting it do you mean watching reaction videos?
>>
>>317608164
Good thing he isn't in charge of the final product but coding which is where he does best.
>>
>>317608185
What I mean is they think they're going to play a bunch of cool "immersive" youtube reaction worthy games on their phones with that headset. I stand by that no one is going to develop games for it due to hardware limitations.
>>
>>317608142
If by PC you mean personal cellphone then yes
>>
>>317608485
The smaller indi games are the easiest to make. You really going to say that when the mobile marketshare is easily bigger than PC?
>>
>>317608870
Most indie games made for phones do not benefit from VR.
>>
>>317608952
Not what I meant, obviously the VR games made for cell phone hardware are going to be smaller in scale.
>>
>>317608485
Most of them just want to watch TV. Netflix with the Oculus Cinema app is what sold it. Once they implement social features so you can netflix n chill over the net it's going to explode.
>>
>>317609092
And people are expecting large scale, and will be severely disappointed by GearVR. No one is going to be developing for it next year when the hype is dead.
>>
>>317609396
>And people are expecting large scale

Are you just pulling things out of your ass now? Nothing on the Rift is large in scale except for shit normies wouldn't play anyway like Eve Valkyrie. All those pewdiepie let's plays and whatnot that the masses have seen for VR have been small scale demos.

You're just as hell bent about this thing failing as the VR detractors and will be proven wrong again and again.

>>

lol. you overestimate the normies. I'll bet most don't even know what they're buying. they are expecting a holodeck or holograms or some shit.
>>
>>317609364
What's with the dumb idea of putting retarded names to each generation of children?
Isn't that why we have year numbers?
>>
>>317606754
Being sold out doesnt necessarily mean it's a success, they could've just produce a low amount.

But whoever thinks VR is gonna flip is retarded. This is the next big thing in gaming.
>>
>>317610038
You couldn't be more wrong. It's normies are the ones that are most impressed by it. If anything it's jaded gamers like /v/ are the ones expecting the holodeck. Just look at all the reaction videos on youtube and then look at /v/ complain about it because they didn't react the same way.

It doesn't matter what it can do, when it shuts you out of your immediate surroundings. It's a foolish pipe dream they'll keep pushing, but it won't work. People are more than happy with regular screens that still let them see the world around them.

Well. Mostly the oculusi.
>>
>>317614173
Keep talking about it where? I haven't heard about eye strain being an issue for ages.

Basically the only issue there is left is that it has a fixed focus point. This is just something your brain gets used to which is why it takes a moment to adjust after you take the headset off. There have been talks with experts in the field about this, obviously Oculus has done this since they don't want to get sued, and it's really a non-issue. It'll be fixed with Light Field displays anyway.
>>
>>317606754

Instead it's shitty cell phone VR. Lame

>>
>>317613410
>No more than it is an issue for spending too much time on the computer.
That too is an issue though. Only that VR is even worse because it's even closer to your eyes.

Reading books and staring at displays too much without a frequent change of distance and focus turns you near-sighted. Or rather, it worsens your eyes' ability to swiftly change focus at will. Meaning that you're still likely able to see good at the common distance you're used to, but your ability to focus clearly at other distances will be deteriorated.

The stereotype of bookworms with glasses isn't for nothing. It's a thing that really happens.
>>
Why do people pretend that this is good for anything other than porn?

on one hand its a damn phone, why would i want to use a damn phone to do VR when i can do steam games and play games I already have a proven track record of enjoying already? emulation steam library, the whole shibang on my monitor xbox ps4 etc

and on the other hand i can see how it is a nice price reducer to introduce to the public the concept of vr and to try it out for their first time as they are already accustomed to netflix and app purchases and mobile app stores and things such as that. they already have (at least in general) some type of mobile phone and typically one of the latest kinds. ( there are some vr headsets that do iPhone.) but really reduces hardware prices when you already have your hardware in your pocket everyday beforehand.

but really i wish this wasn't true, but it is, this is an Ouya of VR guys. YES this *IS* literally the Ouya of VR.

This is thanks to the headset's two 1080 x 1200 screens, the highest resolution displays out there, and the two sensors that hang on your wall to track movement. The downside is that the Vive is expected to cost more than other headsets, possibly between £200 - £400.

Generations should just be every decade.
>>
>>317631890
Every 2 decades. A generation of 10 years doesn't make sense unless everybody is African.
>>
>>317631993
That might have made sense 50 years ago, but the shift from the 90s to the 00s was the biggest ever in terms of childhood. Someone born even 5 years later had a completely different experience.
>>
>>317631993

They have a different upbringing, though. You can't tell me someone born in 1980 grew up the same way that a person born in 1999 did.

That being said I don't know what generations are generally used for other than lumping people together.
>>
>>317632202
You mean because of rapid technological advancement?

I'd argue that 20 years is still fine. It's not supposed to be about technology at all. A new birth means the start of a new generation. 20 is a nice round figure that will catch a lot of young pregnancies, although granted 30 probably even makes more sense given the West's current fertility.
>>
>>317606754

Has anyone tried this thing? Can you use your regular phone with it or just whatever apps they give you? Can I use it on a plane to browse the internet and watch movies in "full screen eyes mode" with no eye tracking shit? just basically a monitor strapped to my face for my phone so I can disconnect from the world?
>>
>>317632242
a real generation usually around a decade because of the cultural stability necessary to create people who feel "the same". the whole X, Y, Z and millenials are literally copyrighted marketing buzzwords made to sell books made by self claimed specialist validating themselves alone.
It's like EA and promoting "AAA" to sell their games.

I just tried one Samsung ones where you put the phone earlier today.
While you can clearly see and count the pixels in front of your eyes, once you stop being a dick and get past that, it's quite impressive.

I don't see it working for games, though.
Peripheral vision didn't work, neither to the sides or up and down. I wouldn't want to play a game in it.

>>
>>317634493
>Having exaggerated and unjustified expectations
Who determines what expectations are exaggerated/reasonable and justified/unjustified?

Serious question.
>>
>>317634028
Well, just saying what it felt like, man.
In a monitor you can look at the edges of the monitor without moving the camera, so you can spot someone on the corner of the screen, for example, while also watching something else.
Vision gets distorted on the VR headset, so while it's supposed to work just as good, it doesn't. It stretches everything.

>>317634076
>>317634414
What I meant by "being a dick" is the fact that the first thing I complained about (to myself) was the fact that I could count the pixels if I wanted to, so big they were. Then after I stopped being a dick and just decided to enjoy the sample video, it got enjoyable.
>>
>>317634562
Blame Samsung for not pushing for better optics like the kind Oculus is developing. Samsung is holding Oculus and Carmack back.
>>
>>317634843
Yep, pretty much. The consumer Rift will have less SDE and look sharper despite having a lower res.
>>
>>317634801
Common sense, at least I would like to say. Obviously it's not that easy but here's my reasoning:

If you buy something and did not properly educate yourself on what you were getting into, and then end up complaining because of something that's actually your own fault for not knowing about, is that justified or reasonable?

>Vision gets distorted on the VR headset, so while it's supposed to work just as good, it doesn't. It stretches everything.

Isn't it the other way around? When you raise the FOV on your computer screen, it doesn't actually raise the area of your retina lit by the display, it just squishes more into the scene on your monitor. While with proper VR headsets, the lenses un-squish the image on the display, so that it looks perfectly accurate and linear when the image gets to your eyes, and nothing is stretched.

If what you're seeing is stretched then something is going wrong either in the software, or the hardware calibration. Also the lenses on the Gear VR might be terrible compared to the ones on the Rift or Vive, so that could be a factor as well.

>>
>>317635814
That is simplified to the point of still being too confusing and misinforming. Not only is the vergence different, but so is the accomodation, or the focusing of your eyes. The lenses focus the image at a distance away so that in effect it is like looking at something from that distance away.
>>
>>317635720
That's how many of these games are going to be played bro. That whole extra box that comes with Sony's VR is just a video processor so it can send shit to the TV. They're trying to steer as far away as they can from making VR look anti-social otherwise every parent in the US is going to tell their kid they can't have it.
