At best you get a small spike in sales followed by an inevitable downwind. At worst you piss away the goodwill and what could have been a respectable sales count turns into 5 digits or fewer. Look at the comic book industry - their motto is practically "no news is bad news" and marketing relies on pissing off the hardcore and pandering to shallow slacktivists, and sales continue to tumble down.
Nintendo aren't the only ones to treat their RPGs like this. Sony, Sega and more do the same in the west. The general assumption for everyone except Square is that the JRPG is a self-sustaining genre in the west at this point, where marketing it is an unnecessary expense because the gain is a risk while relying on the existing market isn't as much of one.
And Square is the only exception because they are literally THE JRPG company, and their biggest shtick is AAA JRPGs.
