I would be curious to know which bullet hell shoot em' up games are actually possible to beat with one life.

Most of the time you'll have to wait get inside the pattern and maneuver between the gaps in the laser. The pattern is actually pretty fun to dodge oonce you get it,thought i hated it at first too.

You just have to stream slowly, then when the lasers spawn do a little quick movement to separate yourself of the aimed bullets for a split second, read the lasers pattern, dodge the lasers and stream again. Then when you get to the edge of the screen you "cross-stream" the aimed bullets.

If you look up a great shooter called Guardian Force, the boss attacks are a highlight - axes, lasers, missiles, bullets, spinning maces, giant cannons, etc.
Another shooter that does this well is Soukyogurentai. And of course the venerable Gradius V.
