The companion AI is the absolute fucking worst in FO4. MGSV did it right with the fact that DD keeps his distance and, more importantly, the dog has no collision. You walk into him he doesn't slow you down until he gets out of the way, he immediately does so.
Meanwhile dogmeat is all up in your ass, and when you want to back out of a small area you have to wait for him to fucking move or else you're not going anywhere

I didn't play MGSV but it took a whole 15 minutes of gametime into FO4 to have that dog completely and absolutely block my path, not react to me walking to the other side of the room, and just sit there like a brick wall in the door, while I unload 90 bullets into its fucking head which it doesn't give a shit about.

D-Dog looks a hell of a lot cooler, but Fallout evidently thinks canines are immune to immolation, or any form of pain in general. which is probably a nice feature to have in a dog. It's just a shame the AI is so fucking terrible.
