Assuming you aren't an idiot who threw away notice that you are being sued that was served by the court and actually file a response, the court will determine if there is merit to move forward. If there is, attorneys will start filing motions and doing discovery. At this point, the whole thing can go away if both parties agree to settle. If they don't, and no one can get a summary judgment (which is basically that side wins), they have to argue it out in court. If the person suing wins, they get a judgement, which is basically an IOU and a bit difficult to collect on if the other party doesn't have any assets.
The big problem is that you DO have to pay your own legal defense in the case that you are sued in civil court, unless the court decides the other side fucked up so badly they should have to pay for your lawyer. Its pretty rare for them to do that, and stands in contrast to other legal systems like the one in the UK, which assigns attorney's fees to the loser.
The reason its brought up as a matter of bankruptcy is that if you get a huge fucking judgment against you, there is no way you can actually pay it, so you declare bankruptcy to get the obligation cleared, which is actually a good thing in as much as there are a fair number of protections you get under bankruptcy, like you generally won't lose your home if you're current on payments, though it varies state by state on the specifics.

To be fair, most corporations know there is no money in going after small guys, because they can't collect on it. They're primary concern is usually to get you to stop whatever the fuck it is you're doing that is hurting their business. The whole thing with the RIAA suing people for downloading MP3s was more of a scare tactic with a few unfortunate schmucks getting caught up in it. If someone with money is looking to hurt you, they don't need lawyers to do it.
The more prominent concern with lawsuits is a symptom of the fucked up US healthcare system, where in people are legally obligated to seek treatment for the sick and injured and hospitals are legally required to stabilize them, but there is no mechanic for guaranteeing payment, so you end up with people with huge hospital bills they can't afford to pay (even if they are well enough to do as far as providing for their basic necessities), and the hospital will then turn around and sue because they need to get their money somehow. Usually its a method to get people to pay at least part of their bill, but generally just forces people in to bankruptcy they were going to have to file anyway.
Any time a lawyer is looking at suing someone, their first question after they determine you have a case they can win is whether the other party has anything you can take. If they don't, the lawyers won't bother with the case unless the client is willing to pay the costs of the lawsuit out of pocket.

Its only self defense if you have a reasonable belief that they are there to harm you, and even then you can only respond with an appropriate level of force. They aren't trespassing unless you have a posted sign that forbids their activity. Without that, you have to first actually tell them to go away and not come back. Its not a home invasion unless they push their way in to the house/apartment. You might not even be able to shoot someone intruding in your home depending on if your state isn't a castle doctrine state, in which case you may have a duty to retreat and assess the threat. Even a cop without a warrant can enter your home if they are doing a safety sweep, which they would probably do if they got a call from a couple of people saying some guy threatened them with a gun for knocking on their door.
If someone shows up on your doorstep and your first response is to point a gun at them, that's cut and dry aggravated assault. The proper response is to tell them to go away. If they don't, you call the cops yourself. You only get to threaten or shoot them if they actually invade your home and you live in a castle doctrine state. The real important thing there is they have to actually enter your home.
