Sakurai's really inconsistent with how accurate he gets with characters, but third parties are almost guaranteed to be accurate since they're such a special case. The amount of effort put into making Mega Man and Ryu true to their games is astounding.
When it comes to actual Nintendo fighters, it's a crapshoot. He's gotten better about it, Smash 4 is easily the most true-to-canon Smash for its newcomers, but all the older characters are fucked if they didn't get it right the first time since Sakurai doesn't want to upset people by changing things.

I'm still butthurt that the shovel is so fucking useless, when it could've had interaction with downB. Dig up stumps for a second attack, holes persist for a moment after being dug that anyone runs into trips, using downB on a hole uses a pitfall trap instead of a sapling, maybe something with flowers.
Would've been real cool and could make an alternate playstyle where you create an environment that fucks up other people with traps and hazards, like spending time creating that perfect town.
