I personally like it because it looks like Cloud was combining his old 1st Class SOLDIER aesthetic with a pseudo biker look, like he was trying to develop a new identity for himself but still wanted to pay homage to his old friend.

It has nothing to do with him leaning his sword on anything. When you swing with your dominant hand you leave that shoulder exposed thus the pauldron exist to deflect blows. His pauldron is located on the side that needs less protection.
