Companions require ammo for guns you give them this time around, but they do not deplete fusion cores for power armor you give them. They can use a 1/100 fusion core for the entire game.
If you find a power armor frame that you can't use, and have no where to stash it or apply it, give it to a companion, even if they're one you don't use, and whatever settlement you leave them at will have a power armored guard at all times.

It'd be a great feature if it supported skill checks instead of partially replacing them, but it's still dependent on a real-time conversation system which has had its problems ever since Skyrim and was made even worse in FO4.

That may have been true for some or all artists, but not the entire dev team. Todd himself mentioned playing a lot of Fallout in a 1998 interview, a year before Zenimax was even founded and six years before they'd acquire IP.

I felt the same way. With all the emphasis on Power Armor, I thought there'd be some huge, 20mm anti-tank cannon or something like that.
The Minigun sucked dick too, even with four ranks of Heavy Weapons.
