So will this game finally be the one to revive the 3D collectathon platformer genre?
>>
>>316522346
No

Would that be awesome? Yes. But it won't happen, its a niche game for a niche audience (by modern consumer standards)
>>
Whatever happened to A Hat in Time?
>>
>The low poly indie phase will never begin
>>
>>316522346
No. It's going to be a huge let down just like every single time somebody tries to release a rebooted or updated version of a classic game.
>>
>>316522673
>Implying indie devs will ever be smart or talented enough to make resources that can't be made in MS paint.
>>
Would be cool, but prolly wont.

Maintaining guarded hopefulness along preparedness for it being shit.
>>
>>316522782
How about ex-AAA ones?
...oh right, planetary anihilation.

>Doesn't know you can make 3d texture maps in MS Paint
Where have you been? Under Iraq?
>>
>>316522991
I know you can, however I should extend what I said to "using MS paint to make shitty sprites". Making low poly 3D models using vertex arrays is actually incredibly easy but expecting the average indie dev to know basic trigonometry is like asking them to bring you the moon.
>>
>>316523298
Ok, yeah. That I can agree with. It's still fun to see them try, though. Ex: give them the Mario face map and tell them: make something original in MS Paint.

If you liked Banjo Kazooie, you'll want to play.
Otherwise, steer clear.
>>
That'd be nice.

As long as it doesn't lead to a flood of crap like back in 2002.

Or another DK64-level game that overdoes it.

Post laylee ass

I feel like no one would do what DK64 did.

>3D collectathon platformer genre

A label nobody use at the time because, for the most part, it just meant platformers with open levels and multiple goals. Yet after DK64, people act like this was always an inherently bad thing and ignore how fucking amazingly designed the games were.
>>
>>316523528
I dont get what you mean.

Guessing you were not here for the first couple threads.

Somebody posted porn, I guess. And?

This genre was never really good to be honest family. It was popular more because of the spectacle of playing a platformer in 3D. It forced you to collect shit as padding, to make up for a lack of content, but running around searching for shit was never fun.
>>
>>316526489
Banjo Kazooie and some PS2 ones like Spongebob Battle For Bikini Bottom were great. They had some platforming challenge while being an exploration adventure game really well too. It's Banjo Tooie and DK64 that took it maybe a step too far.

>collecting shit

When will this meme die? Collection platformers were the best designed, most advanced and refined games the systems of the time had to offer. The best of them were always praised and loved almost unanimously.

> Banjo Tooie

No, BT was easily as good as the original game. It was spectacularly creative, DK64 and Conker are what lost the point.
>>
>>316527157
Banjo Tooie was a cluster fuck and the example I give whenever people ask why characters' skills are reset in sequels..
>>
>>316527157
Conker was a bit linear and not really trying to be a collectathon so I don't count it as much. Still like it though, even if it has aged.

Tooie...I think is a good game still. I think some of the worlds are not as great. The idea of revisiting the worlds with new abilities while keeping your abilities from the first game is great, cuts a lot of tutorial bullshit and it sets the pace at the outset really well...but I think Witchyworld is unfinished and way too mini game heavy, Terrydactyland can fuck off with how boring and confusing it is. Grunty Industries is slightly better in that it isn't boring but I think it can drag too. And I hate Jolly Roger's Lagoon on the premise of almost an entire underwater level with not great underwater controls. Shame since I like it on land, it's a really great level aesthetics wise. I also think gutting a little of the backtracking wouldn't hurt it either, but eh.

I had my fair share of issues with it.
>>
>>316527531
Call it a clusterfuck if you want, but I loved the game's complexity. The opening levels were garbage, but on getting to Wichy World and the lagoon the game really becomes its own thing and realising how much bigger the levels are than you first think they are is really satisfying. The train is one of the more clever things I've seen in a video game.
>>
>>316528097
I didn't hate it, I just think they tried to jam in way too much and interweave it way too profusely. In the first game the skills were very general and everything was restricted to one stage so you could sort of discern when something required you to unlock a new skill and assume that it was probably somewhere in that stage, but Banjo Tooie had all that new shit on top of the old shit so when you got stuck you got really fucking stuck. It wasn't just a case of going "right, is there a new skill, let's try and find it" because it could have been a Mumbo skill, it could have been a new form and in some cases the solution was physically in another stage.

For example how the fuck was I supposed to know the final stage was going to be in the sky? I spent fucking ages trying to figure out that shit in Terrydactyland.
>>
>>316528667
That's exactly what I love about it though, it has that Zelda like quality of an interconnected world where you have to figure out how the fuck shit works in order to solve everything. The one big downside to this is the way a thing hidden in one world could actually really be hidden in a short-cut that's only assessable from another world, and you have no way of knowing until you stumble upon it. This is downright bullshit that makes it impossible to narrow down a search for what you want to find.
