Why do people consider this game so good?
I finally installed and tried it since some neckbeard bought it for me on steam last year out of nowhere, and the first impression is kind of lousy based on the hype it gets
The intro was pretty cool and "cinematic" for such an old game, great setup- logs are fun to read, soundtrack is pretty good so far
But does it get better? The stealth gameplay feels pretty lousy, the shooting/ combat mechanics are to hyperbole slightly pretty shitty, not to mention bloating the amount of finnicky trifling with useless items like the thing for unlocking doors (not the multitool, the key tool which however still requires a key to the specific door)
Is there even a way to reload a gun without shooting the magazine empty first?

By default reload is bound to semicolon. Go into the keybinds and change it to something more useful along with the scope and laser sight keys.
Stealth and combat are both clunky to modern sensibilities, but you'll get a better feel for it as you go.

The first level is basically a big jungle gym, intended to introduce the player to the idea that "in this game, there are almost always multiple ways to get your shit done, and you're free to go about your business the way you see fit."
As a result, it sucks, but think of it as an extension of the tutorial. "You learned all your shit before, now into the wild with you to try it out."

I start the game, and some old guys are talking about some boring shit. Something about a plague, I guess. The only cool part was when they were talking about me being a supersoldier.
My hopes were dashed as soon as the game started. Considering I'm a "nano-aug" (what the fuck does that even mean?) the fact that I die in a handful of pistol shots is shitty.
Guns and melee in this game are both broken. It takes forever to line up a shot and bullets do laughable damage.

There's a lot of things that are clunky about it now, sure.
But it's also got some of the best level design ever, great story, huge amount of content for a game that isn't really open world, and its pretty good at having several different ways of handling any given situation.

Deus ex machina means God by Machine, or along those lines. It was used in theatrical shit back in the day when uses trap doors to elevate a character to save the day in a godly like fashion that would never actually happen in real life. Hence the term Deus ex machina in literature, it's not bad to have in works of fiction as they are often needed to help protagonists.
The reason why the game is called Deus ex is literally a play on the term used mostly for literature. Humanity becomes more than they were through the use of augmentation, first by mechanical machines they attach to themselves and then with nano augments. They will become more then men, Gods.

Tong's idea of fucking it all up was shown to be an absolute terrible idea(see: the collapse), and going with Morgan, you don't believe he'll simply backstab you? He keeps the leader frozen and misinformed, and in his eyes, you're a soldier, not a leader.
First level honesty sucks but introduces you to freedom of play. The combat never gets better, think of Deus ex as and RPG not a FPS
The amazing part of the game is the little details. Like how characters dialogue comments on things you do in the world. Certain important characters can be saved or killed indirectly. The levels are large and detailed with tons of weapons caches hidden everywhere. Also, this game does not hold your hand in the slightest.

Yeah, stealth sucks early on, the end is rushed, there are a few points where the game pigeon holes you.
Starting out is kind of crappy, but intentional. You aren't going to appreciate skill upgrades if you already start out as a T-1000 instead of a regular human soldier with some enhancements.
