Bullet sponges are bad game design. Using enemy health to inflate difficulty is a cheap cop out to replace more complex enemy attack patterns, and therefore the player doesn't need to approach different enemies or situations with any other strategy in mind other than "I need to deal as much damage as quickly as possible".
