Here's what I think:
People get stranger every single day. The internet houses a lot of things to do, as such makes you think differently. Years and years of dealing with raw people changes how you react to things. As such, brand or name loyalty is a big thing in being accepted. So fandoms are around, with everyone celebrating, but also being accepted as part of a group. As such, over time, the lightheartedness dies and it becomes serious, almost part of life, something to die for. Now, we are reachign the point where these people who don't go outside are sending death threats to end stuff they dont want around anymore. Like a fanartist making fat characters thin. Where we care too much about graphics in games, tumblr cares too much about fat acceptance.
In effect, we are just as wicked as those tumblr people, but with different ideologies and probably a few more thousand brain cells.

It's probably people that don't have much else going on in their lives, so they base their identify on a singular hobby or interest. It's why people get so defensive when something changes about the thing they like without their permission, or when someone joins the "community" of their hobby that they can't identify with.
I wouldn't call it "wicked" as much as I would childish, which isn't to say it's any less toxic. And it's not like posters on /v/ haven't ever made spergy posts about things.
