>SteamOS is a strange beast. Valve is trying to make sure they own and control the gaming ecosystem on your gaming PC, but for now it's a good way to make sure you can't play all the games you'd like to; developers need to port their games specifically to SteamOS, an operating system built on Linux-based foundations.
>rs Technica wanted to test performance of games on Windows 10 as well as SteamOS, but one of the limiting factors points to SteamOS's biggest weaknesses, as games like Fallout 4 or Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 aren't available on the platform yet. If you play new releases on the PC, SteamOS is going to be a bum deal for now.
>"We finally settled on a couple of mid-to-late-2014 releases that had SteamOS ports suitable for our tests: Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor and Metro: Last Light Redux," the article states. "Both are relatively graphically intensive 3D games with built-in benchmarking tools and a variety of quality sliders to play with (including six handy presets in Shadow of Mordor's case). For all the gaming benchmarks, we ran each test at least three times and took the median number to ensure the results were reliable." The results are pretty ugly, with framerates noticeably lower on SteamOS.
>Valve games running on the Source engine didn't fare much better, with every release seeing a significant performance hit when running on SteamOS.
What do you think /v/? I for one, want to see /g/'s face after >Windows is botnet
>Muh linux is future for gaming
http://www.polygon.com/2015/11/13/9728888/steam-valve-steamos-framerate-windows
SteamOS is botnet as well
>>316489343
Yes, but it was praised by /g/.
>>316489237
>1792x1120 resolution
>>316489586
You are an idiot
devs would have to do twice the work to port it on both windows and linux, as well as nvidia/amd releasing drivers which, from what ive heard, are really bad on linux
>devs make half assed shitty port to linux
>that some how means steamos is bad
LOL
SteamOS, steam machines and the steam controllers are a big joke. Only valvetards would buy them
>>316489660
probably because fullscreen mode doesn't work in Linux or something
>>316489926
I bought steamOs yesterday
>>316490001
The resolution doesn't exist
>>316489898
Explain why Source games aren't great either? Wouldn't you make sure your own games work on your own fucking OS?
>>316490081
>The resolution doesn't exist
any resolution exists....
>>316489237
FUCKING
DROPPED
fuck that kike gaben.
>>316490182
Is linux powerful enough to handle anything above 360p?
>>316490182
retard
>>316489926
>steam controllers
YOU JUST HAVE TO GET USED TO IT!
>>316489828
>devs would have to do twice the work to port it on both windows and linux
Not true. OpenGL/Vulkan and SDL are available on both Linux and Windows. Complaining that supporting standard platforms is difficult while building for a non-standard proprietary platform is the height of idiocy.
This just highlights the need for Valve to more clearly state the minimum requirements for a Steam Machine to prevent the choice of hardware that favors Windows, and the clear need for Vulkan and SPIR-V.
>>316490236
792p exists.
>>316490141
Source 2 works great with linux
>>316489898
So valve made shitty ports of valve games on valve OS?
Great advertising for them i guess.
>>316490249
>>316490001
SteamOS is built around fullscreen, though I don't think just Windowed mode would be enough to drop that much performance.
>>316490223
I play games in 2160p on Linux all the time.
>>316490454
>SteamOS is built around fullscreen
even more reason to not use it
>>316490319
>p
not a resolution
>Valvedrones literally bought prebuilt dells and some dumb fucking controller just because LE GABEN XD told them to
people can complain about console kids all day long, but when it comes down to it, your average pc user is just as fucking retarded, and thats a FACT
>Linux
>Gaming
Top kek, go back to your server rooms
>>316490454
Why? Why would you waste your build on a OS that's barely supported by couple of games?
>>316490551

What's the alt? If you're gonna make your own OS, you make it linux.
I would say valve should've reached out to microsoft and try to make a "Windows Gaming OS", but then microsoft would want a cut of the profits and valve doesnt like sharing
>>316490617
Because I believe in the future of the PC as a platform, and seeing it in the hands of a console company committed to the idea of PC games as games streamed from an Xbox makes me weep.
>>316490928
>What's the alt
I don't know... Windows maybe?
>>316490943
It has a chance but only if the costs were lowered.
>>316490928
"Hey could you make a product whose sole purpose is to compete against another one of your products that earns you more money?"
Microsoft isn't Google, they'd never go for it. Besides, that would still leave Gabe's balls in Microsoft's hands.
DirectX is windows only
Vulkan is not even finished
OpenGL always run worse than DirectX
you shouldn't expect it run better than windows
>>316490558
We PC users don't count steamfags as PCbros. There's basically console kiddies. Steam is a console.
>>316491205
>Steam is a console
NO GAMES
literally
NO GAMES
DAT LOONIX PERFORMANCE SENPAI
>>316490859
Yes?
>>316489586
/g/ are a bunch of smartphone fanatics, they don't give a shit about PCs any more.
>comparing win 10 and steamos and blaming steamos
Dumb. They shouldve compared linux games on other distros to steamos. Saying steamos is killing the framerate implies its steamos itself causing it, not the linux version of the game
>>316492554
Except the article wanted to test out SteamOS' performance on games against Windows 10.
>>316492826
And Im saying thats a dumb comparison to make if youre trying to look at steamos itself.
>>316492969
Right especially given that they're using a system built several years ago that won't benefit from all the work that's gone into optimizing performance of Nvidia's recent hardware.
Lets see Alienware Alpha vs Xbox One.
>>316492969
>please stop comparing steamos to its competitors, I had such high hopes for gabeN
>>316489237
>Linking directly to polygon
>>316494087
I hate valve, but its mote important to compare syeamos to other linux distros given that they have either the same or very similar versions of the games
>>316494264
Okay, newfriend. Here's a tip for ya : You can link to everything except Reddit and Kotaku. Lurk moar.
