I just have to ask myself: Why the fuck Cloud? It doesn't make sense, its just too random.
There has to be some though behind it
My theory is that FF7HD will be on the NX aswell and since Smash is often used as a marketing platform (see Shulk and Marth/Roy) this decision was probably deliberate to promote FF7 to a younger audience.
With the new DQ being confirmed for NX aswell its highly likely Square will cooperate with Nintendo on releasing FF7HD on the Wii U aswell.

Final Fantasy was on NES and SNES for 1 through 6. 7 and 8 also got PC releases. 9 and 11 were MMOs. Only 10, 12 and parts of the 13 trilogy is PlayStation exclusive, if I recall correctly. Also, the IP is owned by SquareEnix -- not Sony.

I'm just kind of annoyed at how similar to every other sword guy he appears to be. Would have been more unique AND more platform appropriate to use an archetype like black mage. With megaman they chose to go back to basics, wish they did the same here.
FF7 is super well known and popular, that's all there is to it. It just makes sense to add him.
I've seen people here argue Nintendo is advertising a non-Nintendo game but the thing is, everybody already knows Cloud. Putting Cloud in Smash brings more curious FF fans to check out Smash than the other way around.

I think the point he's making is that Cloud is typically seen as a Sony character. When you're making a list of characters who appeared on the Playstation 1, Cloud is up there alongside Crash and Spyro. Yeah, he was also on the PC, but it was his appearance on the Playstation that made him popular.
