Bethesda knows how to make an open RPG (well, every new release it is less RPG and more pure Action), but thats all.

They fail on animations, AI, optimization, graphics, and in the "feel" of the game in general. As an example of the last, Oblivion cities, or this Fallout 4 and their easy stuypid meme jokes.

They make mediocre stories and quests, and also they used to make good lore.

In every Bethesda release you should expect bugs, glitches, instability, shittier animatons and graphics, and this is like that since Daggerfall (there was a bug where you can't leave the dungeons lol).

Still as I said before, they make nice open worlds that you want to keep exploring and knowing what the fuck happened there.

MGSV has a handful of enemies nearby and that's it. Anything more than 100 metres away is culled out of existence and regenerated when you get close. The world is completely static and unchanging and never reacts to anything you've done.

Because Gamebryo should have been aborted or come to term by this point, the engine is over a decade old.

Fox engine was designed from scratch for next gen hardware (at the time).

IIRC, gamebryo was made before pixel shaders, vertex shaders and all that other stuff became unified in GPU's, so it probably takes a performance hit by having to use the new unified architecture when it was designed with the old in mind.

Beth should have made a new engine long ago though.

I'm on ps4 and I was okay with the frame rate. It was running smoothly until The brotherhood vertibirds start flying around in the dense city area near Goodneighbor. It starts chugging to like 5-10 fps because all of the enemies in the city are firing at them. I hope they go away after I go investigate the blimp Other than this I've been really surprised with how polished this is compared to Bethesdas other releases. I've only experienced one graphical glitch with a pulse grenade and a few enemies clipping through walls. The companions haven't annoyed me like they usually do except Preston. Its like he tries to predict where I'm going and take the lead, which usually ends up getting me stuck in a doorway or corner, so I dropped him after one mission.
