Here is a good advice, don't play anything that isn't at least 2-3 years old, don't buy next gen shit and don't bother with /v/ when it comes to industry drama, this way when you catch up with what is popular today you will be able to experience optimized material (and for free), plus you will be able to dodge all the overhyped fotm garbage and go right into the legit good games, its what i do and it works just fine

Technological advance opened up the industry to more and more people as an extremely impressive achievement to create and interact with man-made worlds limited to nothing but imagination
We've seen a lot of incredible games come from this
Unfortunately, this also paved the way for failures and clowns to create pseudo-movies because with detailed cutscenes came the possibility to bypass gameplay and inject some third rate story into it so you have to watch it (The Order 1886, Modern Bioware) instead of the story and world coming directly from your interaction and involvement with it (Baldur's Gate, Fallout 1-2)
This new technology has made it so widespread it's become a multi billion dollar industry, and people treat it like such. Celebrities, big budgets, big advertisement, and mass appeal.
It's actually quite easy.
As the stereotype of loser basement nerds playing games has gone away, a lot of different people have come into gaming. You have soccer moms, lawyers, doctors and all kinds of people playing these games today.
As this has grown, companies saw opportunity for profit growth and have shifted a lot of development budget into marketing and profit: DLC, micro transactions, early access, etc.
It's not the developer's fault. Developers are merely just code monkeys who do exactly what they're told to do. They're punching bags for pissed off consumers. When in reality, it's the executives, the board members, the financial department and everyone above them that they should be angry with.
Games became shit because people started buying the shit and now won't stop buying the shit so the shit is being produced at a mass level.

Games used to be aimed at gamers. Now they are aimed at the everyman. Gamers wanted challenging systems. Everyman wants something easy and none challenging. This makes most game very pick up and play, which makes it unappealing to gamers.
