I can only theorize. But the current SquareEnix has been going through massive structure changes. About the same time that DQ games stopped being released, guys like Wada were being phased out of SquareEnix.
Now there's completely new management on all levels. And some of the top brass (including the head CEO of SE) has said he wants to support Dragon Quest. Or more accurately, he said it a year ago. This might finally be him fulfilling that promise.
Let's just hope it extends to all the other overlooked DQ games. And before that troll pops in here, no. DQXI and Monsters have NOT been confirmed.

I suggest going back and playing all the games in release order (the remakes of course). Then playing VII when it comes out. You have a year to catch up.

Those two are a bit older and may be a bit more of a chore to get through (especially 2). However, I'd say give them a shot, ideally the SNES versions, especially since 1, 2 and 3 make up a trilogy. Dragon Quest VII is even more linear and dialogue driven than VIII. And I feel like Dragon Quest VII is just a more robust and streamlined version of VI (which is also very story driven and uses the same classes/dual world concepts).
Dragon Quest VIII gave you tons more to explore so the story doesn't seem overwhelming to me. Whereas in DQVI and VII, you have dozens of hours where dialogue and going to one set area is your only choice.

Even though I've already played the 3DS versions of VII and VIII (just a few months ago) I'm still happy with the news. Threads should be more fun when they're out. It's also kinda got me wanting to go back to DQ IX which I stopped after job selection became available because I just could not get into it. I figured if I could get through VI I could get through any of them. Maybe it was DQ fatigue, I'd spent most of the year playing DQ (with other games in-between) and I played VII and VIII back to back.

I've heard something about AI training in that version. What exactly is that? I've seen some videos where characters seem to have AI modes like in the later games. Is that what AI training is? Just selecting a mode for them? Sounds like a dodged a bullet in some ways choosing to play some of the remakes of the games (I normally just play the original versions of any given game before remakes). Though I'm still interested in the FC versions of I and III for some reason.

See they don't think of their action until it's their turn. So if you get hit by a crit your healer will most likely heal you than something you would have committed. That is, Bianca is already totally into you and with Flora you see what you get, but with Debora there's more development. That's a pretty small list, but yeah. The on-screen enemies are nice in DQ VIII but they suck in DQ VII. You will get quite frustrated with the amount of times enemies spawn in your way in a small corridor.

I think it was because at the time she was kind of a suprise. At the time it was unheard of for princess characters to be primary damage dealers in JRPGS. Also its not obvious at the beggining of her quest, she gradually grows into her role quite smoothly.

That reminds me. Some of the naming origins for the Japanese spells are pretty interesting. Like Abakumun (spell that opens doors from Dragon Quest III). Horii said that it's named that because:

That's very weird, and I can definitely see it happening, Japan loves their wordplays. I also can now see why the English translated names are onomatopoeia-styled, instead of going with good'ol "Fireball" or "Thunderbolt", kinda brings at least a bit of the humor from the original.

New to Dragon Quest. Gonna start with these 3DS games, main motivation is the grills and armor. Are these outfits exclusive to one games, or are they available across the entire series?

While you'll occasionally see girls wearing that armor, you can only get characters with it in Dragon Quest III (and I think it's a cameo outfit you can get in DQ IX, but I'm not sure).
