Smash may have done a ton of crazy shit like allowing Third Party Characters of ranging companies, but Mickey Mouse is primarily a symbol of Western Animation. He has no stake in the vidya industry. Disney's biggest videogame character is Sora, KH's protagonist.
On the flip side, Sora is the easiest character to implement of the entire lot. Traveling to different worlds is second nature to the character.

I think you underestimate the popularity of Chrono Trigger. It's a classic. Everyone has either played it. Or they know about it.
Tat being said, I'm not saying it's equally as popular as FF& and Cloud. I'm saying it's "comparable". Like, you can put it in the same league for how well it's revered. Cloud may out perform Crono, but they're still in the same realm of popularity.
