It's okay to have fun by bending the rules of reality sometimes, and werewolves are pretty underused so I am willing to depend on "excuses" to have them in the 1500's.
Though a completely realistic portrayal of werewolves, zombies and vampires would be a really cool thing, I think both have their place.
The only time I've ever been bothered with things getting to unrealistic is large scale zombie outbreaks where the military has been beaten.
Aside from ACTUALLY being a werewolf, playing an alien in any of the Alien games plays like a werewolf.

WtA is dependent on modern werewolves and they ultimately agree with my perspective. The issue is that having werewolves prey on an isolated village without a military to defend it does not fit in the Renaissance or post-Renaissance. Werewolves should be living relics, that have to work to find a place in the world, from then on. That's a big part of WtA.

Honestly, having a game where werewolves are a "part of nature" and disregard society and seek balance would be really cool.
It's kind of hard to represent in a game where you play as a werewolf all of the potential that werewolves have, I think.
Perhaps, "nature calls" to certain kinds of individuals that it believes feel the same way, and they answer the call with the might of a werewolf.
That said, for such a game you'd have to have forces that are anti-nature. Things such as magic would be a prime candidate for that. You could play as a truly neutral force of nature that terrifies everyone.
It could be really cool if you had some damn good writers and world designers on the job. I don't think you're going to get a good werewolf game if you don't have those two things.
Of course, this is all imo. I love games with fantastic writing, characters and ambiance above pretty much anything else personally. I doubt everyone feels the same way and people would be more than content just killing shit cause you have claws.
